The Norwich University Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to the historical records of the university and the personal papers of its alumni and affiliates. Our beautiful reading room on the 5th floor of the Kreitzberg Library is open to the public five days a week. We love working with faculty, students, and anyone who wants to learn more about the primary sources that have shaped N

We had a wonderful time meeting so many incoming students this afternoon at the College of Arts & Sciences Carnival during Academic Day. Our activity was asking students to guess the years of two archival images. They did pretty well! The lucky winners get a free beverage at the Daily Grind in the Kreitzberg Library - answers in the comments.

Have you heard about the great Grenville Dodge documentary from Iowa PBS? It is extremely well done and highlights how NU's own Dodge was a man of passion, talent, and commitment. Even better news is that Norwich University Archives and Special Collections is hosting a screening at 5 pm on September 25th on campus, in the new Cyber Fusion Center. This will be open to students, faculty/staff, and the community. More details to follow.

For Korean War Armistice Day on July 27th, we want to honor Richard H. Cummings (1929-2024). Richard, from Massachusetts, class of 1951, was a cadet at NU through his junior year, but after transferring to Platt Institute, he was drafted and served in Korea. We have an amazing oral history from Richard in 2016, and it is definitely worth the read. The NU Record reported in 1954 that Ricard married his wife Nancy, and many decades later, the Valley News reported in his 2024 obituary that he died at 95 of "a broken heart only 5 weeks after his beloved wife Nancy." Richard obviously never lost his affection for Norwich, as it was also requested that donations be made to NU in lieu of flowers.

The Archives does not have much material for many summer events and holidays, as they fall outside the traditional semesters, but the 4th of July is the exception. Here is a broadside from our Event Ephemera collection that describes the program planned for Fourth of July exercises in either Woodstock or Norwich, Vermont, in 1857, including the reading of the Declaration of Independence.
