Join us this Sunday, April 15 for the FREE & FOR SALE FRENZY, hosted by the Sustainability Office!

The Free & For Sale Frenzy is an event where you can bring clothes and accessories you're looking to sell, name your price, and sell/buy other students’ clothes. This is a fun and simple way to facilitate reusing clothes and reducing waste!

Drop off your items (tops, dresses, pants, bottoms, outerwear, shoes, accessories) in Weitz 236 from 12-2pm. You’ll fill out a tag for each item with your asking price and preferred payment method (venmo transactions will occur at the event and cash will be distributed in campus mailboxes shortly after). You can also inventory your items HERE before coming to the event.

The sale will take place from 3-5pm in Weitz 236 (ALL ARE WELCOME, regardless of whether you are selling anything)! Changing rooms/mirrors will be available.

Any items not sold must be picked up from 5-6pm OR will be donated to the GSC’s Trans Clothing Closet & the CCCE's Carleton Clothing Connection.

“Environmental racism” describes the fact that people of color and low-income people are most likely to be situated near sources of contamination and away from clean water, air, and soil. A city like Flint, where more than half of the population is black in a state that’s nearly 80 percent white, and where the poverty rate is above 40 percent.

Across the country, African Americans are more than twice as likely as whites to live in a home with substandard plumbing. More than 1 percent of black people live in houses without potable water and modern sanitation, compared to less than 0.5 percent of whites. They are also, understandably, twice as likely as white people to mistrust the water that flows from their taps and to say that more regulation is needed.

It’s not just water: A 1987 report found that race was the most significant predictor of a person living near hazardous waste. Communities that were located near multiple commercial hazardous-waste facilities or a landfill had three times the amount of minority residents as communities that were far away from such dump sites. The Government Accountability Office found in 1983 that black people made up the majority of communities near landfills. Decades later, a 2007 report found that things were actually worse: Communities near commercial hazardous-waste facilities consisted mainly of people of color. Finally, people of color are exposed to a level of nitrogen dioxide—which emanates from cars and industrial sources and can cause respiratory problems—at an average rate 38 percent higher than white people.

SOPE (Students Organized for the Protection of the Environment) will be hosting another bake sale for hurricane recovery efforts on Monday, October 30 from 12-3pm in lower Sayles.

All funds will go to Global Giving, an organization raising money for much needed hurricane relief (https://www.globalgiving.org/).

Stop by for $1 homemade baked goods (there will be vegan and gluten free options!) and help support hurricane/natural disaster relief efforts! Additional donations welcome/encouraged!

Hi Environmentally-Minded Carls!

We are super excited to invite you all to this year’s Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability (UMACS) Conference at Central College in Pella, Iowa, from Friday, September 29 - Saturday, September 30.

This conference is going to be an amazing opportunity to hear from inspiring speakers working on sustainability issues, discuss challenges and successes in environmental work, and meet students from other schools across the Midwest also working on sustainability on their campuses.

If you are interested, the costs of the conference will be paid for by the Sustainability Office. Please email Natalie Jacobson ([email protected]) or Bex Klafter ([email protected]) by WEDNESDAY, SEPT 13 if you want to attend. We will be leaving Carleton around 9am on Friday and will return on Saturday around 8pm.

Next term the Zero Waste Task Force is running two events for student leaders and activists at Carleton. On April 3rd there is a dinner discussion about waste issues at Carleton and how everyone on campus can become an advocate.
