Obituary
Leslie “Les” Thurber, age 78, died peacefully in Boise, Idaho after a long battle with ALS. His daughter, son-in-law, and his granddaughters were by his side. A Celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Loveland Funeral Chapel in La Grande, Oregon. Graveside services will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Following the graveside service, a reception will be held at the American Legion Post 43, 301 Fir Street, La Grande, Oregon

Les was born April 6, 1944, to Emerson Thurber and Katherine (Gale) Thurber in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He graduated in 1962 from Pioneer Valley Regional High School in Northfield, Massachusetts.

Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1962 and was stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington. He served as a naval aviator, assigned to Heavy Attack Squadron 123 (VAH123). In 1966 he was Honorably Discharged from the Navy and enrolled at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington. Following his love of flying, he studied towards his commercial pilot’s license.

While residing in Moses Lake, he served as a security officer for Job Corps. There he met Lois Knapp, a residential advisor for the Women’s Job Corps. They married in June 1968. After their marriage, they moved to Bernardston, Massachusetts to be closer to his family. Their daughter Brenda Jean Thurber was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts.

Les again entered community college working towards his bachelor’s degree while working for Lea and Dean Builders in Bernardston, Massachusetts. His hobbies included teaching aspiring pilots to fly a plane. Les and his brother Jim purchased a Cessna 150 to help achieve this goal.

To complete his bachelor’s degree, Les, Lois and daughter Brenda moved to La Grande, Oregon in the Fall of 1971. Les attended Eastern Oregon University and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Les and Lois would later divorce. Les then married Kathy Scott, from Massachusetts. Les and Kathy would also divorce.

Les held many positions in his life, carpenter, selling modular homes, insulation, insurance salesman, parts man for Western Equipment, auto wrecker operator, storage unit rental. Most recently he was attempting to construct a “dude ranch” get away for people vacationing in Arizona.

Les loved spending time at Denny’s restaurant and the American Legion, chatting with his military friends, trading stories.

Les is survived by daughter Brenda Gould (Robert) of La Grande, Oregon; ex-wives Lois and Kathy both of La Grande, Oregon; and step-children Jeff Scott (Pam) of La Grande, Oregon, Shelby (Joe) Bunao of Lihue, Hawaii, and Melissa Bingaman of Columbus, Ohio. Also surviving are brothers Jim of Turners Falls, MA, Larry (Patty) of Bernardston, MA, and Robert (Caryl) of Athol, MA; granddaughters Kendra Eggleston of Burley, Idaho, Karley Eggleston of Boise, Idaho; great-grandson Walker; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Recently, I learn that members of the class of 1962 were disappointed in the 50th class reunion. An event that eleven classmates worked on for several months to make the 3-day celebration a special time. I learned that the primary dissatisfaction was the restaurant. This got me to thinking. At the time, restaurant options were very limited for large groups. Learning that Terrazza was the choice for the 60th, I wondered why we never considered it. And then, I Googled and memory kicked in: “On October 22, 2011 the former club house/restaurant at the Greenfield Country Club was destroyed in a fire. Over the next year, a brand new building was constructed on the grounds, and Terrazza Ristorante opened its doors on April 1, 2013.” Our 50th Class Reunion was Sept 21-23, 2012. The importance of class reunions are: Remembering and Reminiscing.

Charles Frederick Magoon, 78, died Nov. 17, 2021. Charles Magoon, son of Delmar P. Ma-goon and Dorothy A. Magoon, was raised with his sister Donna in the small New England town of Bernardston, Mass. In Bernardston, he was involved in multiple sports, delivering the local newspaper, attending and helping in the church, and a part of their local Boy Scouts.
Out of high school he was very proud of joining the U.S. Marine Corps where he was stationed in Virginia Beach, Va., where he served for over four years. During those years he was assigned to work on the Grumman A-6 Intruder. After his years in the military he then went to work for GTE as a supervisor where he retired after 30 years and then went on to work as an independent contractor for Verizon as a telecommunications engineer, for 10 years.
He cherished his 40-year marriage with Louise Magoon. Together, they raised their children, Christopher, Shannon, and Heather. He also cherished his grandchildren, Joshua, Kira, Luke, Cassandra, Trevor, Ashton, Landon, and Blake. He was very involved in his family’s lives; he loved to go to all of the sports and music events for his kids and his grandkids.
Charles had lots of hobbies; he loved to read one of his thousands of books, wood working, camping, bird watching, visiting museums, and seeing historic landmarks. He was a long time resident of Yucaipa since 1987.
The memorial service will be held at Weaver-Hughes located at 33629 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa, on Dec. 18, at noon.

Brian Hume
1943 - 2021

Chicopee, MA — Brian G. Hume 77, of Chicopee, Mass. died Thursday evening (8-12-2021) at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Greenfield, Ma. on August 22, 1943 the son of Richard and Ellen (Gardner) Hume. He attended Pioneer Valley Regional High School, and then joined the US Navy. Upon his return from military service he attained his journeyman pipefitters license and worked on the pipe line in Alaska returning working throughout the New England area and retiring from Local 104 Plumbers and Pipefitters union. He attended Toccoa Falls Bible College and became an ordained as a Baptist minister.

He is survived by his children: Brian Hume Jr. and his wife Fonda of Tontitown, Ark. and April Mathewson and her husband Bruce of Arcadia, Fl. and a foster daughter Pinki Mitchell of North Carolina, and Step children, Lee Ann Smith Ward and her husband Scott of Missouri, and Sarah Markette Jamison Simmons and her husband Gary of Georgia. He is also survived by his brothers, William "Bud" Hume and his wife Marsha of Northfield, Ma. and David Quinn Sr. of Northfield, Ma. Five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister Ruth Morton.

There will be celebration of life at the LifePoint Church, 603 New Ludlow Rd, Chicopee, Ma. On Monday (8-16-2021) at 6:00 P.M. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be Sunday (8-15-2021) from 2-4 P.M. At the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave. Northfield, Ma.
