Westmoor School

Westmoor School Westmoor School is one of three elementary schools in Northbrook School District 28. We serve approximately 300 students in grades K-5.

The staff and I welcome you to Westmoor School, home of the Bulldogs. We warmly greet students from kindergarten to fifth grade each day. They enter the building eager and ready to learn thanks to the support they receive from their parents. Westmoor offers a strong academic program that focuses primarily

on reading (literacy), writing, and math in the early grades. Science and social studies curricula are woven into the reading program through the use of non-fiction selections and a biweekly trip to the science lab for hands on instruction. In third through fifth grades, the focus is on comprehensive literacy (reading to learn through direct instruction in comprehension strategies), writing, and math. Science and social studies make up a greater part of these students’ day and are also woven into the language arts selections. In addition, these students have a weekly lab lesson in science. All first through fifth graders’ academic days are balanced with strong instruction in the fine arts. Students enjoy daily physical education, weekly art, and biweekly vocal music instruction. Moreover, starting in third grade students can choose to participate in orchestra and band starts in fourth grade. Children receive a weekly lesson in the instrument of their choice and practice twice weekly before school as an entire orchestra or band. In addition, fifth graders start their study of foreign language with a choice of French or Spanish. Technology instruction and use as a tool for learning is ever present as each classroom has five to six computers and the ability to bring in additional laptops and/or go to the computer lab. Several classrooms are also fitted with interactive projectors and mobile technology such as iPads and iPods. Social emotional literacy (SEL), the ability to successfully deal with life’s challenges and emotions, is equally important to us at Westmoor. Our SEL program, Second Step, is taught in every classroom weekly. The comprehensive scope and sequence developed by the staff addresses children’s needs in and out of the classroom. In the last few years a bully prevention component has been added.
