Countryside Day School At Countryside Day School, we place equal value on the development of character and the acquisition of academic knowledge.

We help students achieve their academic potential while instilling qualities of respect, responsibility and resourcefulness. Countryside has been providing an exceptional learning environment for children in preschool through 8th grade for over 50 years. Our classes are multi-age, in keeping with the Montessori practice. The mixed age groups provide for peer teaching, role models and leadership experience; they also enhance the sense of community within the classroom. Since a successful Montessori environment depends so greatly on children having focused periods of time in which to complete tasks and activities, we make a priority of maximizing uninterrupted work time. Above all, we place the highest importance on serving the needs of the child, for as Maria Montessori said, "One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child itself." Everything in the classroom is designed to meet the developmental needs and interests of the children. There is no ceiling to what children can learn, and they are able to advance through the curriculum as they are ready, without being limited by the progress of their peers. Countryside's traditional materials have been researched and developed during decades of classroom use. Our teachers take great care in preparing the environment so that materials are arranged sequentially, children have comfortable work space and there is freedom of physical movement.

School news! Something pretty special happened in Northbrook last summer!

Countryside Day School, in partnership with the Montessori Center of Minnesota, completed Illinois’ first AMI teacher training courses for both 0–3 and 3–6 Montessori educators, and we’re preparing to do it again in Summer 2027.

These blended AMI Diploma Courses combine flexible online learning with immersive, in-person training right here at Countryside. AMI training is internationally recognized, rigorous, hands-on, and truly transformative, preparing adults not simply to teach, but to understand how children develop, learn, and become independent.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a teacher, changing careers, working with young children, or finding work that feels deeply meaningful, this could be your path. And maybe it’s not you, but someone you know: a nanny, caregiver, parent, educator, or friend with a natural gift for children. Pass it along! Courses aren’t enrolling quite yet, but you can express your interest now and be among the first to hear when registration opens. Learn more and express interest

A lesson in perspective! 🌎
Our Elementary students headed outdoors for Montessori’s “Long Black Strip” lesson, a powerful visual representation of Earth’s history. The long stretch of black represents the age of our planet, while a tiny strip of red at the very end represents the time humans have been here.
A simple lesson that inspires wonder, curiosity, and a little humility about our place in the universe.

At Countryside, we know how meaningful and rewarding this work can be, and YOU may know someone who would feel the same. Countryside is helping the Montessori Center of Minnesota fill its next 0–3 and 3–6 AMI training cohorts, beginning this summer right here in Northbrook!
Think beyond someone already working in a school. It might be a nanny, caregiver, family member, friend, or someone considering a career change who has a natural connection with children and is looking for work with real purpose. ♥️
Please help us spread the word. Sometimes a wonderful Montessori teacher begins with someone simply saying, “I think you’d be really good at this.”

And that’s a wrap on a pretty incredible weekend at Countryside.
New friends made, old friendships strengthened, ideas exchanged, hard questions asked, lots of laughter, and so much wisdom shared. There is something powerful about spending a few days with people who understand both the joy and the complexity of leading a school.
We’re grateful to Whole School Leadership Institute for bringing this group together, and grateful that Countryside got to be home for it this weekend. ❤️

We're only halfway through the Whole School Leadership Institute retreat weekend at Countryside Day School, and already, we've packed so much into our time together.
Presentations, thoughtful breakout conversations, school visits, shared experiences, lots of questions, lots of laughter, and plenty of time simply being together. 💕
School leadership is complex work, and it's valuable to have the time and space to learn from others doing it too.

Through Sunday, we have the privilege of hosting an incredible group of school leaders from across the country, coming together to learn, reflect, share, and support one another in the important work of leading schools.
