student Chloe Dyehouse ’28 spent her summer in the Rhode Island Great Swamp tracking native plant blooms to uncover the impact of climate change. By recreating a study from the 1970s and 80s, she is comparing shifted flowering timelines to understand ecosystem changes, alongside her own research on key pollinators like the rare blunt-horned bee.

at Work! Jiselle Ladriere ’29 returned to her roots this summer at the Davis Bilingual Mariachi Camp with Tucson Unified School District. alum Sylvia Plath ’55 is often remembered for the work she produced near the end of her life, but a newly published edition of The Poems of Sylvia Plath reveals a far more complete picture. Co-edited by Smith research affiliates Karen V. Kukil and Amanda Golden, the five-year project nearly doubles the number of poems in previous collections and offers a closer look at her lifetime of ambition and creativity.

at Work! After discovering a passion for epigenetics during her first year, Vimala Albert ‘29 took initiative and reached out directly to Dr. Carolyn Brown at the University of British Columbia. That bold move led her to Vancouver for the summer, where she conducted cutting-edge research on X-Chromosome Inactivation and gene silencing under the mentorship of Dr. Bronwyn Posynick, PhD. With guidance from her STRIDE mentor and stipend funding through Praxis from the Lazarus Center for Career Development, Vimala was able to fully focus on her international research experience. Her biggest takeaway for fellow Smithies? Leverage your support systems and don't be afraid to reach out for the opportunities you want!

students Sagufta Anchal ’27 and Faithrose Daniel ’27 are among 125 undergraduates awarded $10,000 grants this year to construct lasting "building blocks for peace" around the globe. For Anchal, peace is possible “when a person can be comfortable in their own body, when it’s not treated as a source of shame.” For Daniel, peace-building is centered on empowerment: helping women become economically independent so they are free to make choices about their lives.

Professor of Mathematics Christophe Golé and three co-authors have been awarded the Mathematical Association of America’s prestigious 2026 Euler Book Prize for their work, Do Plants Know Math? Unwinding the Story of Plant Spirals, from Leonardo da Vinci to Now. The national honor celebrates books that enhance public understanding of mathematics, recognizing the team's exploration of phyllotaxis, Fibonacci sequences, and plant geometry.
