The summer drew to a close on a very high note as our conservation team - Abby Dlug `22 and Rachel Gao `22 - joined Manager of Engagement Anjali D'Souza and Director John Berryhill at Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary to collect seeds from native wild rice plants. This effort stemmed from our ongoing efforts to support access to culturally important plants by local Indigenous communities and these seeds will find a home on recently rematriated Indigenous land in the Connecticut River valley. We appreciate Mass Audubon for their support of this work.

Our conservation team's final orchid adventure ended on a high note as they encountered 3 native species of Platanthera: P. blephariglottis, P. clavellata, and P. psychodes. This made for 25 collections in total from 6 different species in support of national research and conservation efforts through the N. American Orchid Conservation Center. A joyful day ended with a hasty exit as we took our last samples just as a storm rolled in!

Fun fact about Succulent House in Lyman Conservatory: not only is it the most prickly greenhouse, but it also dates back to the origins of our garden!

Succulent House and neighboring Show House were rebuilt in 1901 on the site of the botanic garden’s original two-room greenhouse structure. For many years Smith students attended horticulture classes in these houses.
