There are slots at highly competitive schools that go to the highest bidders. This shouldn't be news to anyone. HOWEVER, these slots are limited, and very, very, expensive. Jared Kushner’s dad allegedly paid $2.5 million to get Jared into Harvard, and recent information suggests the current winning bid is over $10 million.

Is this unfair? Of course. But it’s also limited. I wonder whether Jared took a slot from a more deserving poorer kid. I think it more likely that he took a slot from one not quite so rich.

The recent college admissions scandal involving Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman and others amounts to rich people who were either not rich enough or unwilling to bid high enough to win. They committed fraud to earn admission. I do believe that they stole slots from other more deserving candidates. Hopefully they will all suffer very severe consequences.

In the Tuesday press conference, the U.S. attorney perhaps unintentionally emphasized this irony when he said: “We’re not talking about donating a building … We’re talking about fraud.”

For the parents charged in a new FBI investigation, crime was a cheaper and simpler way to get their kids into elite schools than the typical advantages wealthy applicants receive.

If anyone is wondering what legal bribes cost, for Harvard it appears to be north of $10 million.

Spending $500,000 in illegal bribes to get two kids into USC was clearly a bad move.

Advice for parents: Either pony up and pay the legal bribe price, or get tutoring for your kids.

One actress is accused of paying to facilitate cheating on a daughter’s SAT, while the other is accused of bribing a university official twice, once for each daughter.
