As the son of a former boxer Jim McNally grew up around the sport. Jim’s father, Bernie McNally, was the New England Heavyweight Champion as an amateur and professional. Bernie retired as the 14th ranked heavyweight in the world with a professional record of 32-2. After his career ended Bernie began training amateur and professional boxers. When Jim was old enough he would accompany his father to the gym and began working out with the other boxers. The following is a list of Jim’s amateur competitions;
1973 – Semi-finalist, Heavyweight, New England Golden Gloves, Lowell, MA.
1974 – New England Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, Lowell, MA.
1975 – New England AAU Heavyweight Champion, Boston Garden. (Last boxer under the weight of 180 to hold that title)
1976 – Silver Medalist, Heavyweight Division, International Youth Games, Montreal, Canada. (Split-decision loss to future World Heavyweight Champion Tony Tubbs in the Gold Medal bout)
1977 – New England Golden Gloves Light-heavyweight Champion, Lowell, MA. Jim represented the United States in international competitions against England, Canada and Yugoslavia. Jim retired from amateur boxing following the 1977 New England Golden Gloves with an overall record of 61-7. Jim signed a professional contract later that year. From 1977 to 1983, Jim had 20 professional fights. An automobile accident resulted in 2 elbow operations and the end to Jim’s boxing career. He retired as the 17th ranked light-heavyweight in the world with a professional record of 19-1. In 1988, Jim and his father (posthumously) were elected into the Ring 4, Massachusetts Boxing Hall of Fame. Since retiring from boxing Jim began training amateur and professional boxers. Jim’s amateur boxers have won various titles including the New England Silver Mitten and New England Golden Glove championships. Jim’s professional boxers have won Massachusetts and New England championships, and one of Jim’s boxers, John Ruiz, won the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World.

COLLINS IN DECISION LOSS

Jack Collins lost a unanimous decision to Jameer Burton in a three round amateur boxing match yesterday at Big Night Live in Boston. The Bada Bing Tournament was hosted by Sonny's Boxing in Middleton

Burton, from Lewiston, Maine, entered the ring with a 1-0 record. This was Jack Collins' first fight.

This was a really good fight. Burton seemed a lot more experienced than his one fight record. Jack kept the pressure on Burton the entire fight. He used a solid jab and timely combinations to keep this fight close.

I had Jack winning the first round, Burton the second and the third even. I think Burton had a bigger margin in his winning round than Jack did in his and that was the difference.

Jack was understandably upset. But like my father used to say "show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser." Losing hurts.

I am proud of Jack. He did everything we asked of him. He showed a lot of guts and was fighting to win every second of the fight. As a trainer I couldn't ask any more of him.

Good fighters learn from their mistakes and come back better. There is no doubt in my mind that Jack will do just that. He is intelligent and tough! He will be back!

Fridays are turning into one of our busier days. This morning we had bag drills at 9:30 am. We had seven men and 3 women.

The bag drills last about 35 minutes. Depending on how hard you hit the bags the workout can be easy or really hard. I always advise new people to start out easy. You are still going to get a good sweat going either way.

Our age range this morning was 19 to 67. Anyone can do this workout and everyone can benefit from it. With a little warmup before and some exercises after you get one heck of a workout.

Come give it a try! We offer bag drills Monday through Friday at 9:30 am. We also offer them Monday and Thursday night at 6:30 pm.

SPARRING

I have several boys that have been training at the gym for a while and want to take it to the next level. That next level is sparring.

Sparring takes place in the boxing ring. Boxers wear headgear, cup, mouthpiece and 16 ounce sparring gloves. They box against each other unscripted in a controlled setting. The purpose is to practice techniques and strategies rather than winning.

Anyone interested in sparring has to join USA Boxing, the governing body for amateur boxing in the USA. Rules involving age and weight are adhered to at all times.

Safety is first and foremost! Our gym is USA Boxing approved gym and our trainers are also USA Boxing certified. All equipment is also certified by USA Boxing.

If you are interested in sparring or getting started with sparring as your goal now is the time to get started. Stop by the gym and we'll get you going.

Hope to see you at the gym.

Post Workout Pose

Two of our members that frequent the morning bag drills are Marian and Maureen. This morning they were standing together chatting I had them pose for a picture.

Marian is on the left and Maureen on the right.

Two ladies that always have a smile on their face. But don't let the smiles fool you. They are all business and not to be messed with.

THIRD GENERATION CRONIN

We had a very special guest at the gym this morning. Thomas James Cronin made his first appearance with Mom Tina and Dad Matt.

Tom's arrival assures another generation of Cronins working out at McNally Boxing. Dan Cronin and I have known each other for almost 60 years through boxing. He and his brother Billy fought with me through the amateur and professional ranks. They were known as the "Bruise Brothers."

Matt Cronin has been working out at our gym since we opened in 2015. He was a finalist for the New England Golden Gloves novice title in 2020. Matt went on to graduate from Merrimack College and is employed as a police officer in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Check out the handsome family in the attached photo. It isn't known yet if Tom is a lefty or a righty. What a beautiful boy!
