A fact for consideration: most people who are unable to ‘take a compliment’ do not simply have low self-esteem; they have been conditioned by their life‘s experience to use complements as an early warning system for abuse.
Often a manipulative abuser will set up a complement so that they can turn it into a joke.
Often it will be used to fuel later abuse i.e.
“I don’t don’t get it, you’re usually so ___, what’s wrong with you?“
So the next time a person shrinks from a complement, instead of encouraging a thank you or referencing self-esteem, strive to tune your own communication to their needs. Assure them in sincerity that your complement is genuine in the least ambiguous terms possible.
