So sad to report that Vince O’Neill, NPHS Class of 1968 has passed away. Vince was a big part of NP Football history. A running back that was part of the Hall of Fames first group ever inducted team. The 1966/67 back to back State Championship teams were 17-0-1 and relied on Vince for much of the yardage as a speedy half back. Vince’s athletic prowess was also in Track where he was a record setting low and high hurdler. When the great ones are talked about in NP history, Vince’s name will always be in the first paragraph. Our condolences are given to the friends and family of Vince and may he rest in peace. Anyone familiar with NPHS Football in 1966 and 1967 will remember #33 forever.

Next Friday August 28th is the first home Football game for my beloved NPHS Canucks. We will welcome our new Head Coach Steve Brown and wish our kids the best of luck on a great season. I will be announcing the game and will be celebrating a personal milestone for myself. I started my love for Canuck football in September of 1966 when I was an assistant scoreboard operator with Mr Bernie Livingston. That was 6th grade for me. I spent 7th and 8th as a team manager followed by 4 years of playing for the Canucks. In September of 1973 I was asked to be on the chain crew and spent 23 seasons on the sidelines. In 1997 I was given the privilege of becoming the Canucks Announcer. The 28th of this month will be my 60th anniversary of Canuck Football. I have seen great players and Coaches. Vince O’Neil, Rich Searl along with John Johnstonbaugh. Greg Amon, Joe Newsome, Jamal Heron and Louis Smith. Many many more great ones too! Some amazing coaches too! Dick Schneider, Tom Faulkner, and Bob Lake to name a few. One thing stays the same, I can’t wait for the 28th! And my beloved Canuck Football!

This beautiful award was given to NPHS Alumni Association Hall of Fame member August “Sonny” Church on 6/23/1932 by the NPHS PTA for Excellence in Scholarship,Character, and Athletics. Sonny Church was an amazing student, person and athlete that stood 5’9” weighed about 175 and after a standout 4 years at NP where he earned County an State recognition in football, he moved on to Notre Dame University where he played center on the line. Upon returning to North Plainfield he was part of Church’s Market on Somerset St and became the North Plainfield Tax Assessor for many years. We thank his son Dr. Joseph Church for his donation to the Alumni of his father’s beautiful cup. Dr. Church is also a member of the HOF.

It was our pleasure to award these scholarships to 2 deserving seniors on behalf of Don Bowers, creator of the Ernest Jaeger Scholarship. Chloe Rodriguez and Mark Fultz will use these scholarships to help offset college costs. Congratulations and best wishes to both of you.

Last Saturday, 4/18, Our Hall of Fame ceremony went flawlessly and over 180 people enjoyed the acceptance speeches of Bill Eville, Tony Zampella, Van Dickerson, the family of Alan Beckenstein, Garry Apgar, Anthony Krizan, Dr Marilyn Birnbaum and Steve Miller. Karl Gordon and Bob Lake were the coaches of the 1996 State Championship Canuck Baseball team, they spoke along with Captain Mike Passe. It was a wonderful event. My thanks to our Comittee members for their time and dedication. Brian Ivory, Karina Boto, Bob Lake, Amy Six, Bob Kirchberger along with our treasurer, Mike Mandaglio and event coordinator Roger Graubard whose efforts are monumental! Thank you! Many thanks to Moureen Conroy Wenik, she handles all our internet presence and now is busy creating the excellent videos on YouTube showcasing each inductee. Thanks to the NP BOE for their continued support in housing our events. I thank everyone who attended and made it a great community day. Dan Battista NP Alumni President.
