On Feb. 22, 18 spellers from south central Minnesota competed in the South Central Service Cooperative Regional Spelling Bee, a qualifier for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The participating fifth through eighth grade students had previously won their local bees. Brielle Brown, a seventh-grade student from Maple River Schools, who was named champion after correctly spelling “constituent”. Nathaniel Carlovsky, a seventh grader from St. Paul’s Lutheran School, finished in second place, and Anya Stoll from St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran placed third. Congratulations to all these Super Spellers!

Chess is open to any player in grades K-12. You must know how to play the game to enter the tournament, but we welcome all skill levels in this fun & recreational opportunity to meet new friends who enjoy the game as much as you!

SCSC was awarded a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Conference for our Young Writers & Artists Conference. Watch for more information about the conference later this year.

Prairie Lakes is pleased to announce that $182,000 in Arts & Cultural Heritage Grants were awarded to twenty organizations in the region in August 2021. Arts grantees at $13,000 each are: Arts Center of Saint Peter; Daleko Arts, New Prague; Fairmont Opera House; Red Rock Center for the Arts, Fairmont; State Street Theater Company, New Ulm; and the Waseca Arts Council. Arts grantees at $8,000 each are: Blue Earth Valley Concert Assoc., La Grande Bande, Ga***rd, Mankato ACT on Alzheimer’s, Mankato Area Youth Symphony Orchestra, Merely Players Community Theater, Minnesota Valley Chorale, Project GEM, ProMusica Minnesota, South Central Service Cooperative and Waseca–LeSueur Regional Library. Grantees at $6,000 each are: Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Minnesota New Country School, New Ulm Figure Skating Club, Prairie Winds Middle School, Mankato.
