Posted this seven years ago. We’re no longer in the travel ball world, but it still resonates today.

Yesterday was a great day for baseball.

My 15 year old son was brought into a game to pitch with a two run lead in the bottom of the last inning. In his words, it was his first opportunity to pitch in a high stakes situation. His team got beat 9-8, a blown save opportunity. He looked tentative and walked the first batter on four pitches. Balked in a run, got an out and then proceeded to give up two hits and the game was over. It was heart breaking for him and for me. There were many factors throughout the game that lead to the outcome but, he carried the weight of the loss on his shoulders.

There was nothing I could do to lessen his anguish. On the 90 minute drive home and the rest of the evening we talked.... it was the best conversation that I have ever had with him. We visited about success, failure and life.

As I reflect, what a great experience for him. We all get caught up in the moment and wins and losses. In the end, it should be all about the experience and lessons learned.

There is no doubt he learned a great deal yesterday. Some of the best lessons we learn are when the results do not go in our favor.

Meanwhile, on an adjacent field, a game was stopped because an assistant coach punched a parent of an opposing team. Police called in and the game was canceled.

Sunday’s in travel ball can be crazy. Elimination games and the chase for a trophy change some people, not in a good way.

I have coached over one thousand collegiate games. This does not make me an expert but, it does give me a different perspective.

The next time my son gets to pitch in a high stakes situation he will have an experience to reference. Will he handle it differently? Will he be less tentative? I am betting yes. Will the result be different? Who knows? I hope so. But, the result does not really matter.

It is all about the experience and lessons learned.
