Luck isn’t magic; it’s work.

➡️ It’s doing readings and theatre and class and student films and your friend’s short. Rinse and repeat. It’s putting in more than 10,000 hours (Malcolm Gladwell).

➡️ It’s the intense commitment to doing what you love because you must, because it’s a calling.

➡️ It’s making your own opportunity. That opportunity depends on your willingness to put yourself out there. To get directly in the eyeline of the Industry, creating work and being a part of other people creating work, so that you get seen. And you do get seen!

We’re feeling it. And our hearts go out to everyone feeling Gloria Steinem’s passing. Her life, work, and voice moved millions of us, and shaped generations of women and advocates for equality.

Through her writing, activism, and leadership, she challenged inequality and helped create a world where women could imagine more for themselves and for one another. Her influence will continue to shape the lives of women and girls.

“She was incredible, being around her felt like I’d been touched by something large.” - Risa Bramon Garcia, reflecting on her time working on Gloria’s biopic. The film was ultimately not made, but it was a deeply impactful experience.

One of the hardest disciplines in our craft is making time to work outside of self-tapes, and then to use that time to its fullest- learning new habits, tools, and skills- to give you the edge above everyone else so that you are your absolute best. So that you are both sharp and free to do your most compelling work. So that you are in championship shape!

We’re excited…and quite frankly relieved…to see Seth Caskey, Associate Casting Director on The Pitt, and wonderfully generous CD who has taught with us at BGB, share this compelling and revealing real-time viewing of his casting process.

Everything he says here is relevant. Every office does it differently, every Casting Director has their own approach, but this is our shared truth, and if you’re curious about the process a CD goes through, watch and learn. And then get in the practice, so that Casting stops at your tape and can’t wait to share you with the team.

We get it. It’s easy to overcomplicate your self-tapes. The landscape has shifted and evolved rapidly. We’ve gone from “does my background need to be blue” to “should I film this on a horse.” It’s easy to get caught up on the latest tape trend and think *that’s* the reason you’re not booking.

BUT we promise it’s not. Tips and tricks *can be* useful, but at the end of the day, none of it matters if your acting is not phenomenal. Successful tapes are ultimately about phenomenal acting. And we know exactly how to guide you through the process of making successful tapes because BGB actors work. all. the. time.

This is why we made The BGB Studio. To get you out of the mindset of needing to please. To guide you into your power. To be a home where you take risks and big swings, a space to mess up, grow, and do what you love with freedom and abandon. And you keep doing it…for a lifetime. What Richard says is so so so true.

Risa was fortunate enough to cast Richard in Flirting with Disaster and had known him since his days as the Artistic Director of Trinity Rep in Rhode Island. Richard is the kind of artist every writer wants saying their words, every director is excited to collaborate with, every actor wants to partner with. Every Casting Director wants to cast; he’s on everyone’s list all the time!
