This week North Hero Elementary School brought back National Reading Week with their “North Hero School Reading Week.” The school celebrated all things literary with spirit days, including “Reading Is a Super Power” where students and staff dressed like superheroes; “Words Are Everywhere” where everyone wore t-shirts with printed words for children to read; “Wacky Wednesday” inspired the Dr. Seuss book, where the school wore wacky or crazy clothing; “Bring Books to Life” in which participants dressed up as a favorite literary character; and finally the “Mystery Spirit Day” where classes chose a “secret” theme and other classes had to guess what it was. The school held a “Reading Week Challenge” where children were challenged to read picture books (for younger students) or a chapter book (for older students) outside of school in order to earn a pizza party, generously donated by Pan’s Pizza. Family and community members were invited into the school to share a favorite book with students, classes read books to other students, and some children even created their own books!
The event was spearheaded by Academic Interventionist Kristin Todd, with support from Librarian Lauren Drasler and PTYO President Mary Ellen Hutchins, and was meant to encourage students to read and to remind them of the magic of books! Children thoroughly enjoyed the spirit days, welcoming their family and friends into their classrooms for read alouds, creating their own works, and celebrating all their efforts with their pizza party! Although the structure of the school will change next year, Ms. Todd hopes the tradition will carry on and grow, inspiring students and their families to rediscover and celebrate the joy of books!
