Proof we spend more time teaching than posting.

Last month, we had the privilege of welcoming my teacher, Sensei Fagan, back to Atlantic Karate.

He taught an outstanding class on linear movement, timing, and distancing. As valuable as those lessons were for our students, they were equally valuable for me. One of the greatest gifts of having a teacher is the opportunity to continue learning, not only what to teach, but how to teach it more effectively.

Thank you, Sensei, for your guidance, mentorship, and shepherding over the past several decades. I am deeply grateful for the example youโ€™ve set, both on and off the dojo floor.

His visit didnโ€™t end when class was over.

He also spent time with my daughter, Amaya, teaching her how to bake a strawberry rhubarb pie. Iโ€™m proud to report she did an incredible job. The proof? My obi (belt) didnโ€™t fit quite the same for the next week or two!

Moments like these remind me what martial arts eventually become.

At some point, it stops being about hitting harder or chasing the next flashy technique. It becomes about something much deeper. It becomes about shared experiences, lifelong friendships, and people you know would answer the phone if you called at 4:00 in the morning because youโ€™ve spent years learning, sweating, struggling, and growing together.

Who needs to swipe right when youโ€™ve built friendships that can last a lifetime?

Last month, one of our senior students, John Pacheco, had the opportunity to visit the dojo of one of my dearest friends, Charles Quimby senseiโ€ฆ and I couldnโ€™t have been prouder of how he represented Atlantic Karate.

John trained hard, performed exceptionally well, and carried himself with humility, respect, curiosity, and professionalism. Afterward, I received wonderful feedback not only on his technical ability, but also on his character. And as an instructor, there are few compliments that mean more.

Of course, we want our students to develop strong technique. We want them to punch well, kick well, move well, and continually refine their martial arts. Technical skill absolutely matters.

But there is something even more important.

๐Ÿ’ช How a student carries themselves.
๐Ÿค How they behave when they step into someone elseโ€™s dojo.
๐Ÿฅ‹ How they embrace the protocols, traditions, and responsibilities of being a student.

Your technique reflects your training. Your conduct reflects your character.

A dojoโ€™s true reputation is not built within its own wallsโ€ฆit is built every time a student steps outside them.

Every student who visits another school becomes an ambassador for their instructor, their training partners, and their dojo. Long after people forget how fast you moved or how hard you hit, they will remember whether you were respectful, humble, eager to learn, and a pleasure to train with.

John represented Atlantic Karate in exactly that way, and I couldnโ€™t be prouder.

This is a friendly reminder that the dojo is closed this week for February vacation. As many of you know, we alternate each year between February and April, and this year February is our scheduled break.

I hope this week gives your family time to slow down, spend meaningful time together, and truly be present with one another. These moments, even the busy or chaotic ones, often become the stories we smile about in the years ahead.

There are moments that cut through all theory, all armchair analysis, all slow-motion breakdowns.

Ahmed Al Ahmed is one of those moments.

Watching what he did, I donโ€™t feel the urge to critique. I feel the urge to learn.

I want to train with him.
I want to learn from him.
I want him to be my sensei.

Because when it really counted, he embodied the two things that matter most in any real-world confrontation:

He faced fear.
And he acted.

Every self-defense or tactics expert can point out things he couldโ€™ve done differently. Control the weapon. Angles. Timing. Tools. Options. That conversation is easy. Itโ€™s safe. It happens after the danger has passed.

But in that moment, Ahmed got the essentials right:

1. He faced fear.
2. He acted.

Tony Blauer calls it using fear as fuelโ€ฆ not denying it, not freezing under it, not waiting for perfect conditionsโ€ฆ but letting fear sharpen purpose and drive action.

Ahmed didnโ€™t retreat into analysis.
He didnโ€™t wait for certainty.
He didnโ€™t outsource responsibility.

He moved toward the danger for the sake of others.

Thatโ€™s not recklessness.
Thatโ€™s courage under load.

Technique matters. Training matters. Preparation matters. But without the willingness to confront fear and take action, technique is just theory sitting on a shelf.

What I feel watching Ahmed isnโ€™t judgmentโ€ฆ. itโ€™s awe.

Awe at bravery.
Awe at selflessness.
Awe at someone who stepped forward when it wouldโ€™ve been easier to step back.

Thatโ€™s the lesson.

Not perfection.
Not hindsight.
But courage in motion.

Weโ€™re incredibly proud to share that Atlantic Karate raised $๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’ for the ๐€๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐‚๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ซ ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ญ๐ฒ โ€” earning 2nd place among all company teams!

We finished right behind Stratham Audi and Porsche (apparently horsepower helps fundraising too ๐Ÿ˜†)โ€ฆ
โ€ฆbut we did manage to outrank DraftKings and Walmart.
(Take that, corporate giants! ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ’ฅ)

Our fundraising came from selling pink belts, donations made in honor of our team, and the incredible efforts of our students and families who called, emailed, and rallied their loved ones for this cause.

We are beyond grateful โ€” and honestly, blown away โ€” by how our dojo family shows up. Your compassion, energy, and community spirit are what make Atlantic Karate truly special. โค๏ธ

We had a powerful night for World Karate Day training alongside our friends from Authentic Karate Training Center and North Shore Karate Academy.

I couldnโ€™t be more proud of our adult students โ€” John, Scott, Stephanie, and Aidan โ€” for the way they showed up and pushed through the 100-kata challenge with grit and composure. Each of them rose to meet their own obstacles and stayed locked in all the way through.

Moments like this remind us that the real reward in karate isnโ€™t the technique alone โ€” itโ€™s the people beside you. The friendships, the shared sweat, and the respect earned through effort are what make the journey meaningful.

Our dojo had an incredible time participating in the ๐Œ๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ž๐ฌ ๐€๐ ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐‚๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ซ walk this weekend. I continue to be blown away by the kindness, generosity, and heart of this community.

We donโ€™t just train together โ€” we show up for others together.
And yesโ€ฆ after all those squats, stances, and kicks, it turns out we walk pretty well too. ๐Ÿ˜‰
