As we continue to decrease children’s time and space to move and play outdoors, we are seeing a simultaneous rise in the number of children that are presenting with sensory and motor deficits. At the same time, classroom teachers are observing more and more children having trouble with attention, falling out of their seats in school, increased clumsiness, and even aggressiveness with games like tag on the playground.

So, how can we reverse this alarming trend of sensory and motor issues in children? How can we ensure that children are fully engaging their body, mind, and all of their senses?

Outdoor play is the ultimate occupation. There are numerous benefits -- especially when done with other children! 💕

Here is just one:

It optimizes volition. Outdoor play taps into a child's intrinsic motivation systems, setting up the brain for sensory integration (organization of the brain). Children will more likely to do hard things, overcome fears, regulate emotions, engage in new play scenarios, deal with conflict, and challenge themselves in other ways never anticipated or expected.

For example, a child that may not normally want to get dirty, may willingly walk into giant mud puddles when they see other children catching frogs. Another child that typically does not engage in construction or STEM projects in a classroom setting, may willingly build a forts with other children out in the woods. The list can go on and on....

That choice, that motivation to explore & play, can trump their fears, anxieties, apathy, disinterest, and more. As they continue to overcome challenges and test their limits in play, they get more and more confident and develop a strong sense of self.

Outdoor play is a priceless occupation. One that we must defend!

Just wrapped up week 3 of summer camps. These kids play hard all day and can’t wait to do it again the next! It’s been so much fun watching them dive deep into their imaginations and creativity! It’s magical!🪄✨

Spring is cold, spring is wet, spring is warm, spring is the earth waking up from a long cold winter. The children experienced every possible condition this week: rain, sleet, wind, and sun. It’s so beneficial to experience all seasons and types of weather. The nice days feel so much sweeter after the tough ones😉
