Many times I see first time parents super prepared and the home is ready to welcome baby months in advance.
Second and third time parents? Most baby items are still in the garage or basement a month before baby is expected!

Top things needed for baby to come home:
Car seat installed
A place for baby to sleep
A few items of clothes for baby to wear and a swaddle to keep warm
Several bottles and pump items even if breastfeeding is planned, the safety net we often won't need
Changing station, even a changing pad on the bed will do in a pinch!

Of course there are many other things you will find helpful, but babies don't ask for much the first days home from the hospital. Warm, dry, well fed and in parents arms are their top needs!

One topic that is universally on peoples mind is what do I need in my hospital bag.

As a doula, I recommend that people pack their back around 36wks. Set it and forget it until it's go time!

What happens if baby decides to come before you have your bag packed and you have to move quickly? Here are my must have essentials to get through labor:
ID and Insurance Card
Phone and long phone charging cord
Lip Balm and Hair Ties
Bonus points for grabbing a pair of flip flops on the way out the door for the people who like a little something between them and the hospital floors!

Fun fact - each of my baby clients receives a handknit baby hat!
Often you will see me knitting during quiet downtimes at a birth, way better than me staring at you while you nap! Other times birth moves fast and I have to work on it after baby arrives. This photo is from a time last year when lots of babies arrived one after another and these were waiting to be gifted at our post birth meetings!
