For our Black History Celebration at Chicora Elementary, the theme was “Music Through the Years” (1901–2026). Students showcased their learning by performing songs from each era, highlighting how music has evolved over time. A special highlight of the evening was a presentation by Mayor Reggie Burgess, the first African American police chief and the first African American mayor of North Charleston. Mayor Burgess read his book to the school community, and the school proudly purchased a copy for every family to add to their home library. As a keepsake, Mayor Burgess personally signed each book. The school was also excited to welcome Ms. Myers from Every 1 Voice Matters, the author of the book about Mayor Burgess, whose work helped make this celebration even more meaningful.
