✏️ Every Great Writer Starts Somewhere! ✏️
Today was Day 1 of handwriting tutoring for Layla and we completed an initial handwriting assessment to establish a baseline.
My student was asked to write:
📝 Uppercase and lowercase letters
🔢 Numbers
💙 Her name
📖 A sentence
During the assessment, I observed several areas we will be working on together:
• Difficulty recalling some lowercase letters
• Reversed letters and numbers
• Incorrect letter formation
• Misspelled letters and words
• Inconsistent spacing between letters and within two-digit numbers
The exciting part? Once she received one-on-one instruction and verbal cues on proper letter formation, her writing immediately began to improve. With guidance, she showed better letter formation, increased confidence, and greater attention to spacing.
This is exactly why explicit handwriting instruction matters. Many children simply need someone to teach them how to form letters correctly and provide consistent practice with immediate feedback.
I’m excited to watch her confidence and handwriting skills grow over the coming weeks. Stay tuned as we document her progress—because every small improvement is a big step toward becoming a confident writer!

May is the perfect time to refresh your child’s writing habitMays and build confidence—one sentence at a time. Writing isn’t just about neat handwriting; it’s about expressing ideas, building vocabulary, and strengthening critical thinking skills.
If your child struggles to get started, prompts can make all the difference. Keep it simple, fun, and consistent—just 10–15 minutes a day can create real progress.
✨ May Writing Prompts for Kids:
1. What would you do if you could plant a magical garden?
2. Describe your perfect sunny day from morning to night.
3. If you could invent a new holiday, what would it be?
4. Write a letter to your future self.
5. What makes you a great friend?
6. Imagine you found a hidden door—where does it lead?
7. What is your favorite outdoor activity in May?
8. If animals could talk, what would your pet say?
9. Describe your dream picnic.
10. What is something new you want to learn before summer?
Encourage your child to focus on ideas first—not perfection. Writing should feel safe, creative, and enjoyable.
📌 Consistency over perfection.
📌 Creativity over correctness.
📌 Progress over pressure.
