Surviving summer- The changes to schedules can be stressful for your child ( and you as well)...
Here are some ways to help your child develop emotional balance, self regulation, and emotional independence- all skills that will serve them as well as you for a lifetime!
Respond to your child's needs thoughtfully, such as holding, u-rocking, or cuddling them when they're distressed. Pay attention to subtle cues to prevent discomfort or overstimulation.
Model appropriate behavior
Show your child how to regulate their emotions by coaching them to respond calmly and slowly to situations instead of being impulsive.
Provide support and positive feedback.
Give effective praise and be patient. (the latter not always easy)
Create a calm-down kit: Include items like a feelings check-in chart, glitter jars, or play dough to help children focus on being present and ease into a learning-ready state.
You can also teach children breathing techniques, such as breathing in slowly and quietly through their nose and then out through their mouth.
Talk about emotions and allow
your child to be honest with you about how they feel and listen to them when they tell you what they think. If your child has had an outburst or tantrum, try talking to them once they're calm, even if it's the next day.

Reading broadens your knowledge of real people, places and things as well as made-up people, places and things. That allows children to take both real and imagined characters, settings and objects and imagine them in their own life or in a world that exists only in their minds.

So often what students learn from those around them is less directly didactic, and more indirect and observational. Reflective questions are a great exercise to do with your child. It not only puts them at the center of the learning process, but also models good habits of the mind.
