Congratulations to our team member Ed Copes, who has won NSBE Charleston Professionals 2020 Professional Member of the Year for the second year in a row! As Program Chair for the National Society of Black Engineers in Charleston, Ed is responsible for making sure annual events take place, like STEMapalooza and A Walk For Education, along with coordinating community engagement events, where he aids in having NSBE Pros volunteer with other nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity, One80 Place, and Park Circle Cares, of which he has also been a board member since 2017.

Way to go, Ed! We’re so proud of all that you do for our community, our company, and our country!

The NSBE Charleston Professionals and Burke High School will host A Walk For Education on Saturday, February 22, 2020, in downtown Charleston. This college and career fair will be held at Burke from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. High schoolers across the district are encouraged to attend.

The goal of A Walk for Education is to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education, particularly in the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering, and other technologies.

Edward Copes, Programs Chair forNSBE Charleston Professionals, said the event allows colleges to get in front of students. “In addition, we want to let students know that there are companies out there that are willing to hire them,” Copes said. “We encourage students, not sure about STEM, to attend.”

NSBE Charleston Professionals will distribute information about local colleges, HBCUs, SAT preparation guides, local and national scholarships, and the benefits of majoring in STEM fields. Onsite vendors will include colleges, universities, and companies who create and hire STEM professionals such as Boeing and NIWC.

SAT preparation guides will be provided while supplies last and a panel discussion at 2:00 p.m. will round out the afternoon. Members of the Charleston Alphas, who are employed in STEM fields, will be the keynote speakers. Local colleges include Charleston Southern University, University of South Carolina, ECPI, Medical University of South Carolina, Wofford College, Johnson C. Smith University, Tuskegee College, College of Charleston, and The Citadel.

Last week our Healthcare Technology Management Staff participated in NSBE Charleston Professionals STEM fair.

‪Thumbs up for a great visit from Sanders Clyde! We enjoyed talking to the NSBE Charleston Professionals Jr. (STEM) after school program, and touring our Wando Welch Terminal and Columbus Street Terminal. The students had a chance to discuss our upcoming projects with one of our Engineers, Lucy! Charleston County School District Sanders-Clyde Elementary School

🚨 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

The application web portal is now open for students to apply for internships supporting the Department of the Navy's Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Cyber and Data Science Internship Program!

The DoN HBCU/MI Cyber and Data Science Program is a dual phased program consisting of:

Phase I: January - April 2022: Participating students have the opportunity to receive mentoring from Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) personnel, either onsite at the designated collegiate institution, via virtual communication or a combination of both.

Phase II: May - August 2022: College students spend 10 weeks supporting the Department of the Navy's NIWC laboratories and research centers located in Philadelphia, PA; San Diego, CA; Pearl City, HI; Charleston, SC; New Orleans, LA; or Hampton Roads, VA.

First of all, we hope that this post finds you healthy and well. Last year was a very trying year for us all and we hope that you're rebounding from the pandemic.

Due to the pandemic a lot of organizations suffered a drop in membership participation, even during virtual settings.

We wanted to hear back from our past and present members and decided to put together a survey. It's anonymous and it will give the NSBE Charleston Executive Board on how we can do a better job serving the community and serving our membership.
