"The power of storytelling is another way in which the children's developmental needs are met. They naturally love stories, and they are able to take in the stories that the teacher brings to them in a joyful way, developing their memory capacity, their ability to create mental images of events related, and unconsciously imbibing the grammar of the story, providing an early preparation in language arts."

"Outdoor play helps children grow socially, helping them to develop healthy ways of forming friendships, responding to physical interaction, and using their imaginations to entertain each other," says Dr. Lockwood, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "It helps them solve problems, build relationships within their peer group and gain a respect for nature."

Fourth grade marks the beginning of the transition from early childhood to what Waldorf refers to as the “heart of childhood.”
Students are discovering the complexities of human motivations and emotions. Their studies of Norse Mythology encapsulate examples of strength of character, courage, self-sacrifice, perseverance, and the ability to choose consciously.

1st and 2nd graders learn to knit, transforming their will into art and possibly receive their first introduction to ‘coding.’
Dr. Matsumoto, a physicist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, argues that “knitting is coding” and that yarn is a programmable material. She is embarking on a five-year study of the mathematics and mechanics of knitting.
Handwork, like knitting, deepens learning and educates the whole child. It teaches students “abstract concept mastery, simple and complex mathematics, hand, eye, and brain coordination, sensory integration, resiliency through habit, promotes well-being and self-esteem” and “[lays] the groundwork for their future understanding when they do encounter their first computer language.”

Why does time outdoors matter?
U.S. students spend an average of only 25 minutes outside per day 😳
Acorn School students of all ages
have abundant time outdoors daily through play at recess, guided nature walks, gardening, games and movement instruction, and exploring our 3 acres of green space to deepen their relationship with the natural world 🏞️
Studies show that time in nature aids cognitive, social and emotional development, boosts academic performance, reduces stress and increases overall well being ☺️
So go on, get outside today!
