A CHILD'S EARLY ENGAGEMENT with a book is a giant step toward a lifetime of reading. When your child shows interest in a picture, run with it! Ask questions and encourage his response. Here, caregivers at Nia Infant, Toddler, and Child Development Center are fostering this toddler's interest in books through his interest in vehicles. "Vehicles (The Kids' Picture Show)" board book is an selection perfect for this age, and part of a collection recently donated to Charleston County First Steps by BWB.
This past week, a very special event was held at Nia Infant, Toddler, and Child Development Center- One of our Quality Care centers!

This past Monday, November 22, 2021, the co-director of Nia Center, Shaniqua Christian, and AAD member and MUSC dermatologist, Dr. Collen Cotton cut the ribbon on a brand new shade structure at the center’s playground. This new shade structure was revealed alongside N. Charleston City Councilman Sam Hart, CCFS Executive Director Sherry Gilliam, CCFS Early Head Start Program Director Keisha McClain, parent Kristy Tucker, members of our Health Advisory Committee, Board of Directors, and staff. We want to give a very special thank you to Dr. Colleen Cotton, who sponsored the grant application for the shade structure from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

This shade structure was built on the playground so that it can help protect up to 24 children each day from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays as they play outdoors. According to the AAD, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. It only takes on blistering sunburn during childhood to double a person;s chance of developing melanoma. With the loving support and help from the AAD and care centers who continue to put quality care above all else, we are able to curb the effects of harmful UV rays.

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE AAD:

As the largest dermatological association in the world with more than 20,000 physicians, the American Academy of Dermatology is uniquely positioned to educate the public on the rising incidence of skin cancer and how to prevent its occurrence. Although the vast majority of skin cancers are preventable, the numbers in the U.S. keep growing. An alarming 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

To protect your skin from the sun, the AAD recommends that everyone:

1.Seek shade when appropriate, remembering that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shade is shorter than you are, seek shade.
2.Wear protective clothing, such as a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
3.Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all skin not covered by clothing. Broad-spectrum sunscreen provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays, which can both cause skin cancer.
4.Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
5.Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from tanning beds can cause skin cancer and premature skin aging.
