Ozzy and Max had an amazing time learning today at story time!
FRIDAY's MINUTE OF MOVEMENT...…….. FUN WITH TOSS & CATCH!!!!!

How? Start simple! Have your preschoolers simply toss a soft ball, bean bag, or small pillow up and catch. Children’s eyes must focus on the object being tossed at all times. Begin with 2-hand catches and low throws and as they grow more comfortable with toss and catch have them progress to higher 1-hand toss and catches. Once they are ready, have them incorporate walking as they toss and catch. This is such a basic, fun and essential movement activity for children!
Why? “Following an object with the eyes develops eye-hand coordination focusing and eye tracking.” The Maze Handbook by Candace S. Meyer, M.S.
Benefit? This activity helps coordinate eyes and hands. Writing, computer work and many other skills are directly effected by this simple activity.

The Maze Handbook is available for checkout at all of Dorchester District 2 Parent & Family Engagement Centers!

FRIDAY's MINUTE OF MOVEMENT...…….. FUN WITH STEPPING BACK!!!!!
How? Have your child/children walk “backwards” up or down stairs. With adult supervision have them hold on to the hand rail and look straight ahead while walking backwards.
Why? “Walking stairs backward develops whole body coordination moving in a posterior plane, and further enhances motor planning and depth perception.” The Maze Handbook by Candace S. Meyer, M.S.
This activity will helps children learn to do things without looking like buttoning a coat!
The Maze Handbook is available for checkout at all of Dorchester District 2 Parent & Family Engagement Centers!

Good Morning Preschool Story Time Friends!!! Join me this morning at 9:00 for some story time fun!
FRIDAY's MINUTE OF MOVEMENT...…….. FUN WITH SLIDING!!!!!

How? Choose a path along a wall for your children to have fun sliding along! Have your child/children get as close to the wall as possible without touching the wall. Side-step keeping their eyes, face and feet parallel to the wall. Step to the side then slide the other foot along until it reaches the lead foot. Halfway along your designated path, have your child/children turn 180 degrees and finish the remainder of the path with the other leg.
Why? “Sliding “develops laterality, directionality and spatial awareness in the brain/body in an integrative whole-body movement” The Maze Handbook by Candace S. Meyer, M.S.
This activity will help children organize their ‘space and time’ more efficiently as well as helping recognize right from left.

The Maze Handbook is available for checkout at all of Dorchester District 2 Parent & Family Engagement Centers!

FRIDAY's MINUTE OF MOVEMENT...…….. FUN WITH ROLLING!!!!!

How? Children roll on a mat or soft surface on the floor with their legs straight and following your directions.

Simply ROLLING around is such a fun activity for children and can improve skills such as balance, thinking, strength and coordination!

Why? “Rolling provides vestibular stimulation to the brain and builds core strength” The Maze Handbook by Candace S. Meyer, M.S.

Hello story time friends!!!! It’s time for “Talk About It Tuesday.” It’s letter M week, so today we are going to talk about monkeys! When you think about monkeys, you probably only think of a handful of different monkeys you have seen, whether it be on T.V. or at the zoo. However, did you know there are over 264 different species of monkeys in the world? That’s a LOT of different kinds of monkeys. What do you think monkeys eat? They eat fruits, nuts, seeds, and sometimes flowers. Let’s talk about a specific monkey really quick…The Howler monkey. Do you know why this type of monkey is called Howler? It gets its name Howler monkey because it is the loudest monkey of all the species of monkeys and can be heard up to 3 miles away. The smallest monkey in the world is called the Pygmy Marmoset monkey and is only about as big as a banana. How long do you think an adult monkey can live? Most adult monkeys live to be between 10 and 50 years old. Here’s one last fun fact about monkeys. Monkeys, just like humans, have their own unique set of finger prints. No two monkeys’ fingerprints are the same! What’s your favorite thing about monkeys?

Hello story time friends!!!! It’s time for “Talk About It Tuesday.” It’s letter L week, so today we are going to talk about lions! Where do you think wild lions live? All most ALL wild lions live in Africa. But now thanks to the world we live in, there are now zoos all over the world that let you see lions from just about anywhere. How much do you think a male and female lion weigh? A male lion weighs approximately 400 pounds on average and a female weighs approximately 300 pounds on average. They are some very muscular creatures. Here’s a fun fact about baby lions, also known as cubs: When they are born, they have spots. As the babies grow up and become adult lions, those spots fade away. What do you think those dark bushy things are that go around a lion’s neck are called? Those are called manes, and only male lions have them. They are used to protect their neck and head from injures if they get into a fight. Lions are BIG eaters. How much do you think lions will eat in one meal? A lion can eat almost 100 pounds of meat in one meal. That’s a LOT of meat. Here is one last fun fact about lions: Did you know a group of lions is called a heard? A whole heard of lions will roar together to mark their territory. What’s something you love about lions?

Hello story time friends!!!! It’s time for “Talk About It Tuesday.” It’s letter J week, so today we are going to talk about jellyfish! Where do you think jellyfish live? Jellyfish live in the deep, wide ocean! Jellyfish have been around for a LONG time, even before dinosaurs existed. There are a lot of different species of jellyfish. Do you think a jellyfish is a fish? If you guessed no, you are correct. Even though it has fish in its name, it’s not a fish at all. It’s actually an invertebrate, meaning it has no backbone. Did you know jellyfish can come in array of colors? Some types of jellyfish are clear, but some may be pink, yellow, blue, and purple. Even though these jellyfish are colorful, they are still luminescent, meaning see through. Do you think jellyfish can move from side to side? Jellyfish can only move up and down. They get around by going where ever the current takes them. Here is one last fun fact about jellyfish. Do you think jellyfish are made of jelly? They are NOT. They are 95% water. Jellyfish are fascinating creatures. What’s your favorite thing about jellyfish?
