Flight Fix Friday
Small Corrections Win
Big control inputs usually create big problems. Whether you are holding altitude, tracking a course, or landing in crosswind conditions, think in small corrections. Tiny changes are easier to manage, easier to reverse, and less likely to start a pilot-induced roller coaster. Smooth flying is often just disciplined restraint. The airplane does not need drama. It needs calm, measured inputs.

Look Outside First
Under VFR, your best source of information is often outside the windshield. Instruments help, but they do not replace a proper visual scan. Traffic, weather changes, terrain, and runway alignment all begin with looking outside. New pilots sometimes stare at the panel too much and miss what matters most. Keep your eyes moving. The sky rewards pilots who stay curious and alert.

Activities, Courses, Seminars & Webinars - Event Details and Registration - FAA - FAASTeam - FAASafety.gov We will focus on practical decision-making to reduce risk. We’ll begin with cockpit “flows” and how using them can improve efficiency, reduce checklist dependency, and prevent critical omissions. We will then discuss the difference between “legal” and safe. For instance, when pilots avoid ...

Trim Is Not Optional
A poorly trimmed airplane is like wrestling a shopping cart with a bad wheel. If you are constantly pushing or pulling, you are wasting attention and energy. Trim the airplane so it wants to stay where you put it. Good trim improves altitude control, heading control, and scan discipline. It also lowers stress, especially in instrument conditions. If you feel busy, trim is often the first fix.

Aviate, Navigate, Communicate
When something goes sideways, remember the order: aviate, navigate, communicate. Fly the airplane first. Keep it under control, then figure out where you are going, then tell someone what is happening. Pilots get in trouble when they reverse the order and start chasing radios or checklists before stabilizing the aircraft. A well-flown airplane buys you time. Time is usually the most valuable thing in the cockpit.
