The Shirley E. Howes Educational Award is specific to Soroptimist International of Canton/Stark County, and honors the effort and scholarship of a woman attending a college or university to earn a certification, baccalaureate, masters or doctoral degree in Accounting, Finance, or Law-related fields.

Please join me in congratulating Canton/Stark County's 2020-2021 Shirley E Howe Award Winner, Evangeline Agum!

Tell us about yourself! - I am an international student, born and raised in Uganda. I came to the United States about 3 years ago to pursue my education in Accounting at Kent State University at Stark. I have a passion for numbers and when I got the opportunity to intern with an Accounting firm a few times, I was even more certain that this is what I wanted to do. I have always loved being involved and taking up leadership roles on my campus and currently, I serve as the Undergraduate Student Government President, a Campus Ambassador, a Welcome team member among others.

What challenges did you have to deal (if any) with in relation to your education? - My parents have been the ones who have supported me in my education pursuits, financially. My step dad is retired and my mom is self employed so it has not always been easy coming up with full amounts for college and being an international student, my tuition was doubled because of the non- resident status. I am thankful for the different scholarships I have been able to apply for and receive that play a big part in reducing the financial burden.

What is your greatest accomplishment? / What is something you are most proud of?- I am very proud of my achievements at the Kent State Stark campus. In everything I have sought out the opportunities available to me and that has proved so helpful. I am proud of the work I am able to do with USG, meeting with students and helping them feel a part of the campus while also encouraging them to take advantage of opportunities available to them to be successful. The mentorship opportunity that has come with the job is priceless.

How has a teacher/mentor has made an impact on your current path in life? - There are so many Professors who have made such a big impact on my life however if I was to pick one, it would have to be my Financial Accounting professor who encouraged me to attend a Job Fair in my Freshman year. Long story short, from that fair, I got to intern with Deloitte and have been doing so every summer since. I have loved all the experiences with them and I intern with them again in the Winter of 2022, after I graduate.

What is your ultimate career goal as you see it today? - I would really love to keep working with a public accounting firm and work my way up the ranks to partner someday. The opportunities that are available at that position not only for personal growth but the ability to give back and mentor, are endless.
Say anything! - I am so grateful for this scholarship! It means the world to me that people who I don't even know would open their hearts out and support my dreams. I promise, I won't let you down. God bless you!
