KSU would like to celebrate Erin Kelly (she/her) for having her biological illustrations published in two academic journals.

Erin had this to say:
“The art I am making stems from my interest in natural science and relates to my major and minors (Biology, paleontology, geography, environmental studies, and drawing). While I’m not an art major, I do intend on continuing my education in an art field: biological illustration. These series of drawings were commissioned by Dr. Matthew Lehnert and have been published in research journals Acta Biomaterialia and the journal of Biomimetics, as well as the book Insect Anatomy – Structure and Function. They showcase morphology of different anatomical structures of the face/ head of a common grasshopper, different mouthparts of several species of insects, and studies of different parts of a southern mole cricket.”

“I have really enjoyed my time here at Kent Stark, I feel like I have had a unique experience combining my science and art interests and have met many amazing faculty while doing so. The help and direction I’ve received from my professors has set me up to create and continue the art path that I’m on. The individual attention from faculty has really helped me complete my goals, as well as open new doors and experiences provided by my professors.”

“Outside of class I focus on spending time with family, being outdoors gardening or hiking, and working on art and projects.”

After graduation, Erin plans on attending a graduate program. She plans on continuing to create biological and scientific illustrations for textbooks and research journals.

Way to go Erin, and best of luck!

Meet Phoenix!

Phoenix (She/Her) is a senior studio art major from Bolivar, Ohio. She was Inspired to study at Kent Stark by her father, who is an alumnus.

When we asked Phoenix why she chose to study art, she had this to say:

“Art has been the one consistent in my life and has allowed me to share my creativity with others. I am an acrylic painter with a focus on fragmented experiences. I take inspiration for a piece, often coming from my loved ones around me, and I break that story up on the canvas. This typically allows the viewer to create their own story in their head as they observe each fragment, unique from the viewers around them because they all are pulling from their individual experiences.”

Outside of creating beautiful artwork, Phoenix has said that her biggest passions are family and faith. She believes that having healthy relationships with her loved ones and a firm foundation in her faith has allowed her to be creatively productive as well as a better community member.

When asked about her time here at Kent Stark, she said this:

I am a transfer student and am more than happy with my decision to join Kent Stark. My dad graduated from here, which is why I decided to come here after I was unhappy with a previous experience at another university. I was relieved by the reliability of the professors and the way my creations were being pushed. I have enjoyed my peers too, as we are able to professionally critique each other and ask for help. The programs have broadened my horizons and taught me a lot of critical thinking.

Join us in celebrating Phoenix!
