Halloween is approaching fast. Children are more than twice as likely to be struck by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. The risk of pedestrian fatalities is 43% higher on Halloween compared to other nights. As you prepare or create costumes, please consider safety.

Be visible: Add reflective tape, reflective accessories, or light colored details to the costume. Small LED accessories can also improve visibility when used safely.

Don’t obstruct range of vision: if wearing a mask make sure it is secure and will not slip and does not hamper range of vision. Wigs should also fit securely without hair obstructing view.

Check for tripping hazards: capes and dresses should not be too long.

Sadly, a pedestrian is killed every 74 minutes in traffic crashes.

Remember, at some point in the day EVERYONE is a pedestrian:

🚶‍➡️ Follow the rules of the road
🚶‍➡️ Use crosswalks when available
🚶‍➡️ Walk on sidewalks when available

🚘 Look out for pedestrians and minimize blind spots
🚘 Be careful in hard-to-see conditions
🚘 Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
