📚 A book can be old and still be too late to prove a historical claim.

Imagine discovering an account written in 1820 describing something supposedly happening in 1720. It might be useful evidence — but it isn't the same thing as discovering a document produced in 1720. That distinction is crucial in Masonic history.

Later writers may have been working from documents that no longer survive. But they could also have been repeating traditions, interpreting earlier stories through the assumptions of their own period or simply getting things wrong.

So historians ask:
When was the account written?
Where did the writer get their information?
Can their claims be corroborated by contemporary evidence?

This is why dating a source is about much more than putting it into chronological order.

It helps determine what that source can actually prove.
