This week the signs which students have been designing and painting for our new watermelon and pumpkin patch were finished and placed! Students also picked (and enjoyed) cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers for snack. We continued our pollinating in the hoop houses, weeding beds, taking care of seedlings, and writing stories!

The last couple of weeks have been busy in the NBE garden! Students are spending some creative writing time crafting stories from the plantsā€™ pov, picking veggies, harvesting dill, and digging up potatoes! We ended up with over 23 pounds of potatoes, and no potato was deemed too small. Today, we celebrated by baking some and dipping them in ketchup!

Week 4 Summer Garden Recap: It was a hot one! šŸ„µ We spent some time outside each morning, making sure the plants were watered and the sugar snap peas were picked, but then we headed inside. We spent our time baking strawberry shortcakes, making our own popsicles with strawberries and orange juice, putting the finishing touches on our botanist/biologist projects, and started painting some signs for our garden. The pumpkins and watermelons in our new patch have sprouted, and we are looking forward to more painting next week and a new writing project!

Week 3 at Summer Garden Club was a busy one! We are continuing to care for our plants and add new ones, like louffas and our very first pumpkin and watermelon patch! Our germination test revealed that 6-year-old seeds were still very viable, but might just need more time to germinate. The sunflower race is taking off as all varieties have now sprouted! We studied mystery plants and animals in the field as botanists and wildlife biologists, and then took our evidence back to the classroom to identify what we studied. We also put time into weeding the flowerbed in front of school to beautify our learning space, and we ate our fill of sugar snap peas with a sprinkle of strawberries along the way. We ended our week pretending to be bees by pollinating our tomato plants in our tunnel!

Week 2 Summer Garden Recap: Our garden is slowly transforming into a vegetable jungle! Students continue to care for our plants by weeding and watering. Mathematicians calculated the perfect layout for pumpkins and watermelons in our newest space and gardeners continued to fill spaces in with more popcorn seeds and flowers to attract pollinators. Students harvested sugar snap peas, strawberries, and radishes; ranch dressing has become our unofficial mascot of snack time! The Great Sunflower Race is officially underway with the queens taking the lead, although a quick peek under the soil revealed that the other varieties are not far behind. The botanists and wildlife biologists have prepped for their field studies taking place next week and will be on the lookout for mystery plants and wildlife to study.

Week 1 Summer Garden Club Recap: We spent time in the garden weeding, harvesting radishes, sugar snap peas, and the first strawberries, and planting popcorn, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and lots of herbs and flowers! We spent time in the classroom setting up our notebooks, identifying mystery seeds, learning about being botanists and wildlife biologists, and kicking off our sunflower race. We will find out which variety can be the tallest and bloom first by the end of the summer!
