Happy Read Across America week!
We hope students all across the district are traveling far and wide on magical adventures as they read various books throughout the week. We were lucky to get an inside peek of Ms. Heather Ricco's second grade classroom as her students became scientists and created globs and globs of oobleck! This slimy yet solid creation caused great havoc in the classic book "Bartholomew and the Oobleck," but in North Bergen, it brought nothing but smiles. We love seeing teachers keeping the joy of Read Across America alive! Thank you for sharing Ms. Ricco.

On Wednesday, teachers attended a district wide PLC held by the Elementary School Literacy Coaches. In this session, teachers were given the opportunity to reflect on their successes with virtual learning. After reading their reflections, we felt an immense sense of pride in our teachers. Although a virtual learning environment is not an ideal setting, our teachers have risen to the occasion to make it a wonderful and educational experience for our students. They have taken an immense amount of time to learn the various platforms and use them in creating engaging lessons. We would like to share their responses because everyone should see the success from our hard working North Bergen teachers. Thank you Educators, our students are lucky to have you!

Happy Holiday week! We have a special holiday treat for everyone. Clarence, our favorite Skater Dude, is back! This time he is sharing his wish list for Santa Dude, along with a virtual read aloud of "Santa's Secret." Kids, make sure to grab your reading caps, turn them backwards, and get ready for our favorite Dude to spread some awesome holiday cheer! Happy Holidays everyone!

Is there anything better than proud smiling faces on a Friday morning? We have Antonina Feliciano, Lincoln Annex's Kindergarten ESL teacher, to thank for this. Her students were working on a compare and contrast assignment based on ReadyGen's story, "The Little House." Mrs. Feliciano shared with us, "My ESL students had fun comparing the country to the city. A basic sentence to describe the little house being happy and sad." They did a wonderful job. Thank you Mrs. Feliciano for sharing and showcasing their hard work.

The third grade students in Mrs. Turdiu's class have been busy on a Text Feature Scavenger Hunt! This creative activity created by Robert Fulton's third grade teacher, Drita Turdiu, is a great way for students to research text features using interactive google slides. Students began their hunt by reading through the "Science Readers" on Epic. As they read, students searched the nonfiction readers for text features and showcased their findings by creating a google slide for each feature. The slides included a screenshot of the text feature along with a description. Once finished, this file becomes a great tool students can reference throughout the year! So creative Mrs. Turdiu, and wonderful work by your students. Thank you for sharing!

Jamboards are a great interactive tool that can be used across all grade levels. A perfect example is Robert Fulton's first grade teacher Bea Buccos who has had great success using jams with her little ones. Below are some samples she shared of jamboards she used with her Wilson and vocabulary lessons. We love how they are easy to use and even provide a student check-in at the bottom so she can get some insight on how difficult the activity was for her students. Thank you so much for sharing Ms. Buccos. Keep up the amazing work!

The fourth grade teachers at Horace Mann have taken their student check-ins to a fun and creative route. At the beginning of the school year, teachers used google forms and slides to check in with their students. After discovering jamboard, fourth grade leader, Randi Strobel shared with her colleagues how easy it can be to use jamboard for check-ins instead. Fourth grade teacher, Erika Gomez, loved the idea and found this wintry snowman check-in sure to bring a laugh or two to any student or teacher. Mrs. Gomez informed us that her students absolutely love theses check-ins and consistently uses them now.
What a great way to start the day, while providing you some insight on how your students are feeling.

We see you jammin Mrs.Posos and we are loving it!
Fulton's first grade teacher, Mrs. Posos, incorporated jamboard for her book study on the various versions of "The Gingerbread Man." What a great way to use this interactive tool! Yesterday's professional development can be summed up in two words a "collaborative success." ELA and Math coaches joined forces on an informative presentation on interactive whiteboards for all teachers in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Together they were able to showcase the benefits interactive whiteboards have in a virtual learning environment. These tools allow students to share their thinking, understanding and provide the opportunity for quality discussions. We have heard nothing but positive feedback from our teachers which brings us, many smiles. We look forward to continuing our work alongside you with some lesson planning, modeling or co-teaching. Dr. Erin Stinson-Dioguardi has been busy "jammin" these past few weeks at Kennedy School. After taking a very informative PD session on Jamboard by literacy guru Jen Jones, from Hello Literacy, Dr. Stinson-Dioguardi and the literacy coach team went to work creating some Jamboard resources. We are excited to share these resources and how you can incorporate these interactive frames into your guided reading, Wilson lessons, and everyday use! Please join us this Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 1:40 for an optional professional development session on Jamboards. Google links will be sent out this week. Get ready to jam it out!

Horace Mann's 4th grade team has created a spooktacular week of events with a Halloween themed Battle of the Books. Students get to virtually participate by listening to audio versions of the books and then vote on their favorite one. We commend this fourth grade team for collaborating together in efforts to keep students engaged in reading during a virtual learning environment. This Friday, October 30th, is the grand finale where they will choose the best Halloween book. We are eager with excitement to find out who will. Stay tuned...
