We are seeking a Teacher Assistant, K-8 Immediate Opening

School​ Southshire Community School is a Vermont-approved, progressive, family-oriented elementary school (K-8) which focuses on the individual as a learner.
With an emphasis on teaching the importance of leadership, personal responsibility and good citizenship, Southshire strives to help children become individuals who possess academic and critical thinking skills, a love of learning and a strong interest in becoming creative, contributing members of our community.

About the Role​
The individual in this position understands and promotes the Southshire Community School’s mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. Southshire has a strong philosophical commitment to the classroom community. Students are highly valued as individuals, their voice is heard and respected.

This position is responsible for upholding the child-centered approach that supports the individual needs of the student in accordance with the school’s mission and vision. The teacher assistant (TA) will work closely with the school teachers to provide students with additional attention and instruction. The TA will review lessons the teacher introduces in the classroom with students individually and or in small groups to help reinforce the lesson. This individual will also provide feedback to teachers for monitoring student progress and meet regularly with teachers to discuss lesson plans and students’ development. The TA will work with the teacher to provide individualized attention to children who need additional support. The TA will assist teachers in supervising children both in the classroom and outside of the classroom, such as at lunch, recess, and on field trips.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be:
● Provide support to teachers to ensure a safe and stimulating learning environment.
● Aid in instructional efforts of the teachers.
● Assist in end of day pick up.
● Observe and monitor student performance and relay observations to the teachers.
● Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of the group's teacher.
● Attend one staff meeting a month.
● Participate in student conferences when requested.
● Aid in the set up and clean up of classroom materials or equipment.
● Assist teachers in projects or research.
● Enforce school policies and rules.
● Reinforce lessons by reviewing material with students either one-on-one or in small groups.
● Teach and reinforce proper behavior by following school culture.
● Supervise students outside of the classroom during lunch, recess, and on field trips.
● Substitute teaching for a full day as needed.

Qualifications for the Position:

● Interested in working with children of varied ages, skills, and developmental levels.
● Eager to develop skills that empower students’ independent voices, interests, and strengths using progressive educational techniques such as observation and narrative, and emergent curriculum.
● A team player who gains energy from multiple perspectives on individual student needs and from feedback through discussion with peers.
● Able to think and act independently to create learning experiences that support the needs of individual students and the school’s overall mission.
● Flexible with an open approach to education that embraces creativity and an ability to think out-of-the-box.
● A lifelong learner who values development of new knowledge and skills.
● Confident working with a small group of learners in a small school environment.

Qualifications for the Position:

The Candidate must:
● Possess an understanding of academic and emotional child development.
● Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
● Be able to pass a criminal background check.
