Every August, parents tell me the same thing: “Maybe this year will be different.”

And then September comes.

The reminders. The nagging. The homework that gets redone. The tears by 8pm.

And parents start wondering what happened. They tried. They really did.

The problem is that many of the tools parents are given are designed around behavior. They don’t address the specific executive functioning skill underneath the struggle.

If you caught either of my last two workshops, you’ve already seen part of this.

My free Open House on *August 25th at noon Eastern Time* is where I’ll connect those pieces and show you what the full plan can look like for the year ahead.

What if you already know the first week of school is going to look exactly like last year?

The homework battles. The reminders. The frustration. The feeling that you’re managing everything just to get through the night.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve talked about getting started, following through, and what’s actually behind those big emotional reactions.

If you joined either of those workshops, you have a few tools to work with.

But a few tools aren’t the same as having a real plan for the whole year.

So I’m opening the doors to the ADHD Independence Method with a free Open House on *August 25th at noon Eastern Time*.

I’ll walk you through exactly how the program works and answer your questions live.

If you’re ready for a different approach this school year, come join me.

"They just need to want it badly enough.”

That’s the assumption underneath a lot of the advice parents receive about ADHD.

Get them more invested. Find what motivates them. Make the consequence real enough that they start caring.

Here’s the problem.

Motivation is not an executive functioning skill. It cannot substitute for one.

A child who genuinely wants to do well, who asks about their grades, who cares what their teacher thinks, who talks about college, can still sit down to start an assignment and go completely blank.

Wanting to do something does not give a brain the ability to initiate it, sustain it, organize it, or track time through it.

Those are separate systems. And for ADHD kids, those systems often lag significantly behind both their intelligence and their motivation.

When you apply a motivation-based solution to an executive functioning skill gap, nothing changes. Not because your child isn’t trying. Because you’re solving in the wrong direction.

The shift that actually holds is identifying which specific executive functioning skill isn’t there yet. Then building it.

Motivation follows capacity. Not the other way around.

Save this for anyone who tells you your child just needs more motivation. Follow me for what builds the skill instead.

Not in a dramatic sense. Just a real one.

How many evenings this week did you sit beside your child to get it done? How many of those ended the way you hoped?

What did you talk about at dinner, before the homework started?

What did you talk about after?

How does your child feel when they finish? Do they feel like they did it? Or do they feel like the two of you did it?

What’s been building slowly in them. Not about the homework. About what they believe they’re capable of on their own.

These are quiet questions. They don’t require an answer tonight.
But they’re worth sitting with because the answers are already there if you look at the last three weeks honestly.

The homework battle costs more than time. It costs something in the relationship. And something in the story a child is quietly building about what they can and can’t do without someone beside them.

That piece is the one I think about most.

Follow me if you’re ready to look at the full picture. Save this as a reminder to ask the quieter questions.

August assessment spots close August 31, and if you’ve been thinking about this, now is the time to move forward.

If you’ve been watching your child struggle through homework nights and wondering whether something deeper is driving it, that’s the conversation we have on the assessment call.

I ask specific questions about your child’s patterns. Where the shutdown happens. When it doesn’t. What a good night actually looks like.

The answers point to the specific executive functioning skill that’s lagging. Not as a broad category. As a named skill with a specific approach behind it.

That’s what changes the cycle. Not another reward chart. Not another conversation about effort. The actual skill, identified and matched to real support.

August 31 is the close. If you’re ready, don’t wait.

August assessment spots are open right now. If you’ve been thinking about booking, this is the week.

Here’s what I see consistently. The families who wait another semester often come back six months later saying the same thing. We had another really hard year. I wish we had started sooner.

Executive functioning skills don’t develop faster on their own. The cycle of nightly battles, reminders, arguments, and shutdown doesn’t reset when school starts fresh. It picks up exactly where it left off.

If your child is heading into August still struggling to start and follow through, the next school year will look a lot like the last one unless something actually changes.

One assessment call identifies the specific skill that’s lagging. That’s where the shift starts. Don’t wait for another hard semester to make the decision.

Most parents who book the assessment call have been managing the cycle for a while. They’ve tried different strategies. They’ve had the same conversation with their child more than once. They’ve wondered if something is just wrong, or if they’re somehow doing it wrong themselves.

What I see consistently is that neither of those things is true. What’s true is there’s a specific executive functioning skill lagging behind the behavior. And no one has named it yet.

That’s what the assessment call is for. In 45 minutes, we look at the specific pattern, identify the skill, and talk about what support needs to look like going forward.

Most parents leave that call feeling something they haven’t felt in a while. Like there’s finally a real answer.

August spots are open. If you’ve been on the fence, this is the week.
