August is National Make-A-Will Month, and there’s no better time to take care of something you’ve probably been meaning to do. Creating or updating a will is one of the most powerful ways to protect your loved ones and reflect your values. It’s also an opportunity to leave a lasting gift to a cause that’s meaningful to you. And, if you choose, it’s a chance to leave a lasting gift for MCLA—one that will impact the community long after you’re gone.

“As a former trustee and board chair, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand how MCLA carries out its mission to prepare graduates to be practical problem solvers and engaged, resilient global citizens. Students acquire a firm liberal arts foundation, combined with hands-on experiences that prepare them to meet the demands of today’s workplaces and society at large. By including MCLA in my estate plans, I am gratified to know that I will be playing a continuing role in sustaining this impactful work for the benefit of future generations.” —Mohan Boodram, Former Chair, MCLA Board of Trustees

Jonathan Igoe, M.Ed. ’22 is the executive director of Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School (BART), in Adams, Massachusetts, where he draws on his MCLA master’s degree every single day.

He says MCLA professors Michelle Colvin and Dr. Margaret Clark were tremendously supportive while he was a student, and remain invested in his career and in BART's success.

“School leadership involves everything from long-range strategic and financial planning to state compliance, safety coordination, and partnering with our incredible teachers,” he says. “But what I love most about my role at BART is getting to know our students firsthand and witnessing the amazing accomplishments they achieve in the classroom, the community, the arts, and beyond.”

“I believe in the value of an MCLA education," Jonathan says, "particularly knowing that so many teachers come through this program and stay in our local area.”

Did you know that more than half of U.S. adults don’t have a will? August is National Make-A-Will Month, and there’s no better time to take care of something you’ve probably been meaning to do.

Creating or updating a will is one of the most powerful ways to protect your loved ones and reflect your values. It’s also an opportunity to leave a lasting gift to a cause that’s meaningful to you. And, if you choose, it’s a chance to leave a lasting gift for MCLA—one that will impact the community long after you’re gone.

"My husband and I chose to include MCLA in our estate plans to maximize our contributions to the school and ensure a lasting legacy for our family. After the death of my grandparents, the family founded the Blue Chip Scholarship to support MCLA students.

"Recently, we added a provision in each of our wills to further increase the scholarship. This allowed us to provide a more substantial gift and permitted us to take advantage of a matching gift from the Commonwealth. The inclusion of MCLA in our wills telegraphs to our friends and families our support of the institution and provides them with guidance for any memorial gifts." —Buffy D. Lord, Esq., Class of 1998; Chair, MCLA Board of Trustees
