RIP Fred Espenak (1953–2025).

If you watched the April 8, 2024, total solar in North America, your experience was in part due to the work of one man: . With deep gratitude, we remember Fred for his decades of dedication in sharing the wonder of eclipses with the world. Through his tireless work, boundless curiosity, and generous spirit, he brought the a little closer to us all. Thank you, Fred. You will be deeply missed. 😔

EarthSky will be presenting stories and memories of Fred from his writing partner and friend Michael Zeiler on YouTube tomorrow:

Earth remained under the influence of fast overnight last night. A powerful coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) pushed solar wind speeds to a peak of 750-800 kilometers per second! That's over a million miles per hour. This intense solar wind drove G1 (minor) storming last night, with occasional lighting up high-latitude skies. Expect continued stormy conditions through May 19, with solar wind gradually decreasing to 600-700 km/s.

An unexpected storm hit Earth early this morning, catching forecasters off guard. It measured G2 (moderate) on NOAA space weather scales. A glancing blow from a giant burp of sun-stuff known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) triggered the storm. A stunning magnetic filament eruption in the ’s northern hemisphere launched the CME from the sun on May 12. At first expected to miss Earth, the CME delivered a surprising blow to Earth's magnetic field, elevating geomagnetic activity and causing in Earth's high-latitude regions.
