Day 1 of the "Writing the Route" workshop for the National Humanities Festival was an amazing. On Route 66 we experienced some of Oklahoma's "wow" (Arcadia Round Barn), some of Oklahoma's "tenacity" (Lincoln County Museum of Pioneer history), some of Oklahoma's "yes all of us" (Mr. Threatt's historic African-American-owned filling station), and some of Oklahoma's "neon glow" (Route 66 Bowl). Oklahoma weather cut our trip short (classic Oklahoma), and instead Oklahoma people approached us on the street and insisted we take tours of their historic homes (also- classic Oklahoma). We boarded a bus as strangers from all over Oklahoma, met some inspiring people along the way, and planted a seed of community writing. We're ready for the next road trip.

Director Marshall and Dr. Liu (Chair of Modern Languages at OU) are grateful to congressional staff for taking the time to talk with us about the ways that federal humanities funding benefits Oklahomans. Thanks especially to Matt Penner (for Senator Lankford), Jake Johnson (for Senator Mullin), Lauren Ketchum (for Representative Cole), and Rob Sar (for Representative Bice)!

Director Marshall is in DC this week for the National Humanities Alliance meeting and Humanities Advocacy Day. NHA is a great opportunity to learn about advocacy for the humanities and to get to know some of our national leaders active in that work.

Join Us! Forum Marquee Speaker, Dr. Julian Lim
When: Thursday 10/27, 6-7pm
Where: Damphousse Community Room, 9th Floor DHT
The OU Arts and Humanities Forum celebrates the 2022-23 Annual Theme of POROUS with the Marquee Lecture of Dr. Julian Lim (ASU), who will present the talk "Porous Borders and Absolute Power to Exclude." Lim will present research about the historical experience of Mexican, Chinese, and African American men and women who migrated through the El-Paso-Ciudad Juárez border region, tracing how they came together in ways that blurred and confounded elite expectations of racial order. Lim connects the porousness of the border to ongoing state efforts to claim absolute powers to exclude through federal immigration law, Indian law, and territorial law. This talk is free and open to the public.
