On a recent trip to the National Weather Center, GEAR UP the METRO middle schoolers got to launch a weather balloon with an attached radiosonde that sent back data in real time. As the weather balloon climbed, a computer monitor showed the students every change in temperature, wind speed, humidity, and atmospheric pressure.

Students also had the chance to meet with scientists who focus on specific weather phenomena. Supercell thunderstorm expert Matthew Flournoy and lightning expert Vanna Chmielewski shared how they use the data collected in the field to contribute to research focused on improving prediction systems.

College2Career Forums (C2CF) like this one invite students to visit real-world workplace settings and meet with practicing professionals. The goal of these events is to expose students to a variety of careers, the educational pathways to those careers, and hands-on experiences in those fields.
