National Indian Head Start Directors Association
To Stand Strong and Preserve the Identity of AIAN Children and Families
04/22/2026
This week at Parents Unite, the AIAN Team joined parents from across the nation to advocate for what matters most - our children and our communities.
Head Start in Tribal communities is essential. It supports not only school readiness, but also cultural identity, language preservation, and strong family connections. These programs are a lifeline for many families and deserve continued investment and protection.
Thank you to the incredible parents and staff who shared their voices and experiences. Your stories make a difference.

President Trump’s administration released its fiscal year 2027 budget proposal, outlining federal priorities for the year ahead. The proposal maintains current funding levels for Head Start, continuing existing support for the program that serves children and families nationwide. Unfortunately, it does not address the skyrocketing costs facing Head Start programs.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Danny Wells, a former NIHSDA president. He was a great leader and helped to grow the association.

If the shutdown continues, Head Start programs across the country will not receive their funding on November 1st. Tell Congress: End the Shutdown. Protect Head Start.
