It is with deep sadness that SCMS mourns the passing of Gaylyn Studlar (1952–2026), a towering figure in feminist film theory and history. Throughout her distinguished career, Professor Studlar’s pioneering scholarship transformed our understanding of gender, spectatorship, stardom, genre, and fan culture. Her influential books and edited collections opened important new avenues for studying Hollywood cinema, masculinity, performance, Orientalism, and the relationship between film and the other arts. A generous colleague, teacher, and mentor, Gaylyn influenced generations of scholars and students. SCMS extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and students. Her work and contributions to our field will resonate for generations to come.
