Mumtaz Mahal, beloved wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, dies during childbirth. Her passing inspired the creation of the Taj Mahal, a breathtaking monument of eternal love that still awes the world centuries later.

This Day in History:

On June 17, 1885, the dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrived in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.

On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in America opened at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York. Known as a switchback railway, it was the brainchild of LaMarcus Thompson, traveled approximately six miles per hour, and cost a nickel to ride. The new entertainment was an instant success, and by the turn of the century, there were hundreds of roller coasters around the country.

Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the Oregon Treaty, ending their long dispute over the Oregon Territory. The treaty set the boundary at the 49th parallel from the Rocky Mountains to the Strait of Georgia. The U.S. gained control of present-day Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana, while Britain kept Vancouver Island and limited navigation rights on the Columbia River.
