Just got out of a brainstorming meeting with Ann Marie Smith and Lisa Hazlett, who wrote Chapter 11 - Interrogating Boundaries through Reader’s Theater.

The young adult literature book they use in this chapter is Honor Girl: A Graphic Memoir by Maggie Thrash.

Three reasons I enjoy this chapter:
1. It is inclusive.
2. Both scriptwriting and reader’s theater helps student deconstruct and better understand the story.
3. Reader’s theater gets students out of their chairs and moving.

They are going to be making two videos: one on the importance of scriptwriting and one on how to handle when parents or admin want to censor the books you read in class.

Just got out of a brainstorming meeting with Tom Crochunis who wrote Chapter 3 - Exploring Deadly Events through Performance, Visual Storytelling, and Creative Writing.

The Young Adult Literature book used in Ch 3 is What Made Maddy Run.

Three reasons I really enjoy this chapter:
1. It tackles a tough topic that needs to be discussed in the classroom.
2. It uses multiple media sources to investigate the other people’s perspectives who knew Maddy.
3. It uses multiple arts integration strategies to help students work through all of their emotions and understanding of what they are reading.

In his supplementary video, he is going to be discussing the emotional struggles he went through writing the chapter, the importance of talking about difficult topics with teenagers, and the importance of teaching students social emotional skills instead of just getting them hyped up on toxic positivity that everything is going to be okay and if it’s not then you should just suck it up and act like it’s okay.

I am working with the contributors of each chapter to create an additional video to go along with the content of their chapter.

Today I got to meeting with the contributors of the research chapters (Chapter 1 & 2).

For chapter 1, we are going to be creating a video the benefits of arts integration that have been proven through neuroscience research.

For chapter 2, there will be a video, for teachers who love teaching the canon or who have to teach the canon, discussing the benefits of introducing YA Lit to the curriculum through pairing of YA Lit and canonical text.

Three goals of the Arts Integration and Young Adult Literature book series:

1. Get high quality research-based pedagogy practicum books into the hands of pre-service and practicing teachers.

2. Promote collaboration amongst educators

3. Start deconstructing content silos

The first book has two research chapters and nine practicum chapters.

The cover art was painted by a Science Ed teachers.

I’m working on making sure the endorsements represent the all educators in English Ed and Art Ed.

The second book of the series is going to introduce the collaboration of Music Ed.

Be on the lookout for the call of proposals coming out mid-March.

I am pleased to announce the cover art for Arts Integration and Young Adult Literature: Strategies to Enhance Academic Skills and Empower Student Voice. (Coming June 2021)

This was created by one of my students based on concepts found in Chea Parton's chapter "A Bleak Picture?: Critical Pedagogy of Place and Finger Painting with Sadie."

The text used to inspire this art was I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala.

Below is the artist statement and artist bio:

Artist Statement -
This finger painting is inspired by the book I, Rigoberta Menchú: An Indian Woman in Guatemala, by Rigoberta Menchú and Elisabeth Burgos-Debray. Against the background of the cloud forest-covered mountains of El Quiché stands the corn that makes up the principle of survival of the people in that region. The hands -used to grow and process the corn, and to mold it into tortillas- are there to represent the defiance of Kʼicheʼ people as they sustain their culture and traditional way of life against the attacks of a colonizing and oppressive society. The bright colors of traditional female clothing, hand-woven by women in Guatemala since Maya times, brighten the picture, representing Rigoberta Menchú's courage.

Artist Bio.
Claudia Colonnello Olivares was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She has a Ph.D. in Physics and hopes to become a middle school science teacher. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in secondary science education at the University of Oklahoma. Her main interest lies in the integration of the science curriculum with other subjects, in order to engage students in meaningful ways with scientific concepts and practices. In particular, through the integration of science with the arts, she hopes to highlight the creative and aesthetic aspects of science in school classrooms.
