Be sure to check out the article about the 3D Braille campus map they've been creating to help make navigating campus more accessible.

“Most students with low vision or blindness are already connected with external organizations that help them learn to navigate campus before they arrive,” Harman said. “Since we have the tools and technology available here, I wanted to find a way to make that transition even easier.”

Harman initially explored using a Braille conversion machine to create a tactile map. However, the amount of Braille required to represent campus locations made the map poor in quality and difficult to use. Seeking a more practical solution, he turned to Touch Mapper, a platform that creates tactile maps designed specifically for people with visual impairments.

After extensive rounds and editing, Harman developed a scaled campus map in Braille that could easily and accurately be explored through touch. He then partnered with colleague Steve Koehler at Milner Library’s Innovation Hub to bring the project to life through three-dimensional printing.

We were pleased to bring back the revamped Illinois State University Research Experience (ISURE) this summer (this program was formerly known as the Illinois Summer Research Academy). We’re so proud of all the high school students who participated this summer. A couple of those students will continue to work with their mentors this school year.

We would like to thank the faculty mentors and graduate assistants for welcoming young researchers into their labs. We look forward to next year and to helping facilitate mentorships and experiences for young researchers at ISU.

On August 8th at 3:00 pm, there will be a free virtual screening of the documentary “Counted Out” followed by a live conversation about AI. So, if you missed the screening at the Normal Theater last January or would like to see it again and participate in the conversation about “How to Stay Empowered in the Age of AI,” you can visit their event page for more info or to RSVP for the livestream and chat.

In the 21st century, fueled by technology, data, and algorithms, math determines who has the power to shape our world.
