Our new Department Chair, Dr. Max Viatori was in Lima, Peru, this last week for a meeting of the “Blue Anthropocene” project lead by PI Dr. Rebecca Irons (UCL), Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow. The meeting included a special tour of the maritime-themed items in the Museo Larco’s collections and a presentation by an ancestral fishing association that builds traditional caballito de totora reed boats.

Applause for Dr. Frank Beck and graduate student Natasha Tchaikovsky whose research found that the impact of FUSE, a McLean County program for people struggling with substance use and mental health, has resulted in fewer brushes with the criminal justice system—Their research was recently featured on WGLT!

The county-led program, in place since 2019, has contributed to fewer jail bookings for participants, including a steep decline in DUI and traffic charges.
