🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. ETHELYN R. STRONG! 💚💛

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of the woman whose vision helped shape social work education at Norfolk State University.

A Portsmouth, Virginia native and Virginia Union University graduate, Dr. Strong was a pioneer in child welfare and was recognized as the first African American female child welfare worker and supervisor with the Norfolk Department of Social Services.

But her impact extended far beyond her professional career.

In 1960, Dr. Strong played a central role in developing Norfolk State’s undergraduate social work program. She later joined President Lyman Beecher Brooks in advocating before the Virginia General Assembly for legislation authorizing graduate degree programs at Norfolk State. That advocacy helped lay the foundation for the graduate program established in 1974.

Today, the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work carries her name and continues the work she helped make possible.

Her legacy lives in our classrooms.
Her vision lives in our students.
Her commitment to service lives in our profession.

Good Afternoon Social Workers!
Next Tuesday, September 29, we’ll come together to celebrate Dr. Strong’s birthday and honor the legacy of the person whose work helped make our School of Social Work what it is today!
As social workers, we spend so much time thinking about where we’re going that it can be just as important to remember who came before us. Remembering is part of our work, too. It helps us honor the people whose vision, labor, and persistence created the paths we now walk and reminds us that the work we do today becomes part of the legacy someone else will inherit.
We’ll gather at 12:30 p.m. in the Social Work Suite (BMH 335) for some snacks, a small activity, and time to mingle with faculty and one another. Most importantly, it’s simply a chance to pause, celebrate life, and honor the person whose work continues to be part of our story.

The Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work at Norfolk State University is hosting a Virtual LCSW Exam Prep Series every 3rd Sunday of the month from 4:00–5:00 PM via Zoom. 💻

Current & former NSU BSW and MSW students

Each session will provide an opportunity to:
