Yesterday we held our first Read-a-thon for Read Across America day! Our goal was to read for 60 minutes by the end of the school day! We encouraged students and staff to dress up as their favorite book characters.

Parents and community partners were welcomed to guest read in classrooms. Our cafeteria manager read a book about honeybees during lunch in the end our students were given a stick of honey to enjoy. We also had students reading to other grade levels and teachers swapping classrooms to read. All with the goal of reading for one whole hour by the end of the day!

Congratulations Ms. Jones!

Our gym is ready to go for our Valentines Day Dance tomorrow. We can't wait to see the kiddos dressed up!

First grade is studying life in a Virginia Powhatan Indian tribe and comparing it to the way we live in Virginia today. Mrs. Heider's class took advantage of the nice weather to go outside and read a Powhatan story about the Three Sisters (corn, squash, and beans.)

Congratulations to Ms. Ward for being voted Teacher of the Year. She is patient, kind, and demonstrates a passion for educating children. Mary Calcott Elementary School is so grateful to have her!

Each month a teacher will be celebrated for the Mary Calcott Literacy Spotlight! The Mary Calcott Literacy Spotlight will feature teachers who are dedicated to creating well rounded literacy experiences in the classroom (phonological awareness, comprehension, writing, etc.).

For the month of October, Haley Scott, one of our awesome 2nd grade teachers, has been chosen thanks to her dedication to teaching and implementing phonological awareness in her classroom. Make sure to give Ms. Scott a BIG high five when you see her!

Due to continued impacts from this weekend’s inclement weather event, Norfolk Public Schools will operate under a TWO-HOUR DELAY on Tuesday, October 4, 2022.
While weather conditions continue to improve, after consultation with the City of Norfolk’s Emergency Operations Center, the NPS administration has decided to delay the start time of schools by two hours out of an abundance of caution.
Please be advised of the following:
• Downed limbs and high waters may still be affecting parts of the City on Tuesday morning. School buses may be delayed.
• Parents/guardians of students who walk to school should remind their children to stay away from standing water.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter and stay safe!

Calling all Calcott families!!! Now is the time to invest in your kids’ school!!!
