Artist: Katarina Stollsteimer
Title: "Hunger Revealing"
Media: Wire, Fabric, Wood
Dimensions: 11” tall x 9.5’ wide
Artist Statement
I sculpted my piece using wire, wood, and recycled fabrics to create the form of my ribcage, encasing my heart. This piece is an outward expression of my struggles with body image and disordered eating. Much of my self-worth has been placed on my body's physical appearance, not being satisfied unless my ribs are clearly displayed through my skin. Anorexia reveals itself through physical symptoms, such as organ and heart failure, making it one of the deadliest mental illnesses. I have always had difficulties expressing my emotions and seeking help when needed. While my verbal expressions and demeaner often indicate that I am perfectly well, my hunger is always revealed in my physical symptomatology.

On Saturday, Old Dominion University’s Medical Campus welcomed local high school students for the annual High School Medical Conference 🩺✨, hosted by CHKD and Macon & Joan Virginia Health Sciences at ODU.
Associate Professor Dr. Eileen Douglas led an engaging session, Art Therapy as a Career: Art Making & the Brain, giving students a hands-on look at how creativity and neuroscience connect.
Counseling & Art Therapy students, along with Assistant Professor Dr. Janet Kempf, supported the interactive activities and helped make the experience both educational and inspiring.
Thank you for including us—we loved sharing our passion for art therapy with the next generation of healthcare professionals! 🎨🧠
