🔥 New Course for Spring 2026!
CGE 496 – Language and Revolution: English in the Age of American Independence
📘 3 Credits | CRN 33422 | Tues & Thurs 3:00–4:15 PM
How did the American Revolution change the English language—and how did language help shape the Revolution?
In this course, you’ll explore the words, sounds, and ideas that helped build a new nation. Discover how English evolved during this time of radical change—from spelling and pronunciation shifts to the rise of uniquely American expressions and political rhetoric. You’ll also learn about the voices often left out of the story, including Native American languages and the early roots of African American English.
As part of the VA250 celebrations marking 250 years since the Revolution, we’ll take part in special events, guest talks, and hands-on learning experiences that connect history, language, and identity.
✅ Open to all majors—no linguistics background required!
Perfect for students curious about:
- How language reflects culture and history
- The origins of American English and slang
- Differences between British and American English
- Language teaching, writing, or communication
Note: This course can count toward the upper-division general education requirement (Option D).
