ODU English Language Center

ODU English Language Center Study English to achieve your academic, personal, and professional goals at the Old Dominion Univers

Since it was founded in 1981, the English Language Center (ELC) at Old Dominion University has taught thousands of students from nearly 100 countries. The ELC welcomes all students and is eager to assist them in pursuing personal, career and/or academic goals through their study of English. The ELC offers full and part-time courses in English as a Second Language. There is an Intensive Program for students who need in-depth study of English and a Bridge Program for students who have been conditionally accepted by the University. In addition, the ELC also offers a course in TOEFL Preparation, and specially designed courses for professionals or groups of university students. The ELC also sponsors a Conversation Partner program in which international students are paired with Americans to practice their English in informal settings. Learning English can be facilitated and enriched by student participation in out-of-classroom activities. For this reason, many extracurricular activities are available such as trips to widely acclaimed museums, gardens, beach resort areas, sports, cultural events, and Washington, D.C. In addition to these outings, students are encouraged to participate in the many activities and sports events offered by the University. The ELC prides itself on its experienced and highly qualified faculty. All ELC instructors have masters' degrees, and many have lived and taught English all over the world. ELC faculty are observed and consulted as model teachers by both U.S. and international teachers of ESL.

- Admission to the ELC is open to non-native speakers of English who are 18 or older or who have high school diplomas or the equivalent. The English Language Center is an accepted member of both AAIEP and UCIEP, professional agencies which select schools for membership based on their adherence to the highest standards of professional and academic excellence.

🌊 Connecting coastal resilience, engineering, technology, and global learning at ODU!

Old Dominion University’s English Language Center recently welcomed participants from Catholic Kwandong University (CKU) in South Korea for the two-week ANCHOR-GATE Program, developed in collaboration with the ODU Department of Civil Engineering.

Located in a region facing many of the same coastal challenges as Hampton Roads, CKU has a strong interest in coastal resilience. The ANCHOR-GATE Program built on that shared context, bringing together students from multiple academic disciplines to explore how their individual fields can contribute to addressing complex global challenges such as sea-level rise and coastal resilience.

Participants experienced ODU’s research and innovation firsthand through visits to VMASC and HRBRC, tours of rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing facilities in Suffolk, and live field demonstrations of autonomous vessels and sonar technology at MASTS.

The learning extended beyond campus through engagement with community partners, including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Sail Nauticus. These experiences connected classroom and research-based learning with the environmental, maritime, and community perspectives that shape coastal life in Hampton Roads.

A four-part seminar series on cross-disciplinary coastal resilience, specialized engineering lectures, and language and cultural exchanges with ODU students further helped participants make connections across engineering, technology, communication, environmental sustainability, and other fields of study.

More than a traditional short-term academic program, ANCHOR-GATE demonstrates what is possible when global partnerships, interdisciplinary learning, community engagement, and hands-on experiences come together. Through collaborations like this one, ODU students, faculty, researchers, community partners, and international participants are connecting across disciplines—and across oceans—to learn from one another and explore solutions to challenges that extend far beyond any single field. 🌎⚓

Today is World Refugee Day

"World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives."
