On Saturday four of us from the Opera For Everyone ODU class saw the Met HD live production of Richard Strauss’ “Arabella”. It gave us an authentic glimpse of late 19th century Vienna with its elaborate sets and costumes! The story puts a new twist on the idea of a “a pants role” and I’m very glad I didn’t live in Vienna during those times! One of my former voice teachers, Eleanor Steber, sang the title role in the American premier at the Met somewhere in the 50’s. She was a wonderful singer but America was infatuated with European singers at that time so her talents were not as recognized as they should have been! She was the consummate Mozart soprano.
