We’re so excited to celebrate Alumni Weekend in just one month! 🎉

This year, we’re celebrating classes ending in 1s & 6s, with special recognition for the inaugural MD Class of 1976 as they mark their 50th anniversary.

These pioneers were part of the very first class of physicians at EVMS, helping establish the foundation of an institution that has gone on to educate generations of physicians and health professionals. Fifty years later, their legacy continues through the countless lives they have touched through medicine, service and leadership.

Join us as we celebrate the MD Class of 1976 and all of our alumni during Alumni Weekend, October 16–18, and honor the connections and memories that continue to bring our alumni community together.

On September 11, we pause to remember and honor the lives lost on 9/11 and the many individuals who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

For alumnus Jason Moore, MD (Vascular Surgery Fellowship ’15), pictured on the left, the events of 9/11 came at a pivotal moment. He had already decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy, but witnessing the attacks on television that morning cemented his decision to serve his country. During his Navy career, Dr. Moore completed two deployments to Afghanistan — experiences that shaped both his life and his career as a physician.

Dr. Moore recently shared his story, reflecting on his military service, his experiences in Afghanistan and the journey that ultimately led him to vascular surgery. We are proud to call Dr. Moore an alumnus and grateful for the many ways our alumni continue to serve their communities and country.

The MD Class of 2030 marked an important milestone on August 14 as students received their first white coats and were formally welcomed into the medical profession. 🥼

This year’s ceremony featured a special homecoming as alumnus Tyler Simpson, MD (MD '18) returned to deliver the keynote address just months before he returns to EVMS at Old Dominion University as a faculty member in October. Dr. Simpson shared his perspective with the newest generation of medical students as they begin the same journey that helped shape his own career.

The ceremony also celebrated the many connections that make the EVMS at Old Dominion University community special. A record-breaking 24 faculty and alumni family members participated in coating 18 students, adding an especially meaningful family and legacy connection to the tradition.

Philanthropy played an important role in the day as well. Thanks to the generosity of 122 donors, 100% of the Class of 2030’s white coats were sponsored, with support helping fund both the coats and student scholarships.

We had a great time welcoming our newest students to campus! 🎉

We loved getting to know students from Counseling & Art Therapy, Pathologists’ Assistant, Surgical Assisting and Biomedical Sciences (M.S. & Ph.D.) during orientation. From learning a little more about each student to introducing them to the ways they can connect with our alumni community, we enjoyed helping them learn more about the community they’re now a part of.

Imagine being invited back to your alma mater as the featured lecturer for one of its most distinguished annual lecture series—and celebrating your 20th medical school reunion that very same weekend.

That's exactly what's happening for Lee Jennings, MD (MD '06), who will return to campus as the featured speaker for the 2026 Brock Institute–Glennan Center Annual Lectures. Dr. Jennings serves as Division Director of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and Professor of Medicine at The University of Oklahoma Health Campus.

If you're planning to arrive early for Alumni Weekend, we hope you'll join us for Dr. Jennings' Community Lecture on Thursday, October 15, from 5:30–8:00 p.m. at Batten University Brock Commons.
